CLAREMONT, Calif.--- The California Baptist women's water polo team exploded for 23 goals in in the first of two wins at the Claremont Convergence. The Lancers (14-7) defeated Macalester (Minn.) by 17 in their 23-6 win as they posted the highest offensive output in over five years and 200 games. The Lancers then got a win over Whittier College (5-7), outscoring the Poets 15-6.
The Scots were simply overmatched in the first game as CBU's starters played just a few minutes to open the contest. Rachel Easu found the back of the net four times to notch her first hat trick of the season and fourth of her career. Tania Acavedo also chipped in four scores of her own, as Petra Kovacs ended her eight game run of three or more goals with just one score.
The Lancers had 11 scorers, and seven players with multiple goals in the match. Molly Gritchen recorded three goals, while Brittany Bateman, Doris Tran, Kim Latschaw, and Briana Tryon each had two.
Kristen Post tallied seven saves in the match as CBU improved to 2-0 all time vs. Macalester. The Lancers beat the Scots (0-3) 19-4 in the school's only other meeting in 2010.
In the second game against No. 6 (NCAA Div. III) Whittier College Kovacs more than made up for her one goal (in limited time) performance. The junior got the ball past the goalies seven times in the win, while Gritchen, Christina Webb, and Morgan Barrows scored twice apiece to give the Lancers the 16-5 win.
Alyssa Birch assisted on four goals, while CBU's all-time assist leader, Kylie Chevalier, added two dishes to her total. Camryn Rogers had eight saves in the match as CBU sealed the four-game sweep at the Claremont Convergence.
The women have a busy week ahead as they host the second Lancer Invite of 2011 on Friday and Saturday. Prior to the Invite CBU will face No. 16 Indiana and Iona at the Lancer Aquatic Center on Thursday.
