RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University made quite a first impression.
Playing in their first-ever Pacific West Conference game in school history, the Lancers dominated, firing off 35 shots and getting goals from four different players in a 5-0 win over Academy of Art Saturday afternoon.
The win is the Lancers' fourth straight as they improve to 5-1 overall, 1-0 PacWest. The Urban Knights fall to 1-3, 0-1.
Amanda Lammers scored twice and had an assist, Kimberly Allard put in her team-leading fifth goal of the season, Fabiola Zanella da Silva had a goal and an assist, and Eva Solis had two assists to key the Lancer attack.
"This was a definitive performance for the girls," said CBU Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We're trying to find more consistency in each game. The girls stepped up and played well, especially in the second half. We made a few halftime adjustments, and the girls executed them well."
Despite taking 17 shots in the first half, the Lancers only found the back of the net once, carrying just a 1-0 advantage into the intermission. In fact, in the first six minutes the Lancers had four chances in one-on-one situations with Urban Knight keeper Jessica Bibby and failed to score.
Bibby saved one, and AAU saved another off the line. Two other times, the Lancers just elected not to shoot, perhaps being a bit too unselfish.
"I wasn't too concerned, because the girls worked hard to create those opportunities," said St. Clair. "We just need to a better job of recognizing when to be selfish and when not to be selfish. We have some good finishers on this team."
Allard started thing with a goal in the 36th minute after da Silva's initial shot banged off the crossbar. Allard was there for the rebound, easily stuffing it in the net.
Lammers then scored in the 50th and 65th minutes, hooking up with Solis both times. Two minutes after her second strike, da Silva scored in the 67th minute, pouncing on a rebound from a Lammers' shot and tucking it just inside the right post.
Silvia Sanchez rounded out the scoring with a 77th minute goal, one-timing a ball inside the near post off a corner kick from Channing Perea.
