CBU Falls to Utah Valley in Orem

OREM, UT--- The California Baptist women's soccer team traveled to Orem on Saturday evening for its first road Western Athletic Conference game, where the program fell 7-1 to the Wolverines. Despite scoring in the third minute, Utah Valley flexed its offensive dominance to sit at the top of the WAC table alone and bumped CBU to 6-6-1 overall while 2-1 in conference play.

Anja Jestrovic did what she does best with a perfectly lofted corner kick that was cleared away by a UVU defender, which found Nikki Mau at the top of the 18-yard box, who smoked it into the back of the net for an early lead. The home team responded just six minutes later with an equalizer before securing a lead that wouldn't be relinquished via a 33rd-minute goal from Faith Webber.

Utah Valley went on to find the back of the net five more times in the second half, bringing their conference goal tally to 16 this season. CBU's goal was Mau's second of the season and the Lancers' fifth in conference play.

"We started the game well and I thought we were the better team in the first half, so it should have been 2-2 at halftime. Second half we got away from our game plan then fatigue started to set in, which is a tough combination when playing on the road. Offensively, we created some good attacking opportunities but need to do a better job finishing those," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Defensively, we conceded some goals we don't normally concede. We'll fix both of those things in training next week. I'm proud of the players for their fight tonight. We're a better team than what the final score reflected. Sometimes it's not your night, the best thing to do is get a good night sleep and get back to work on the training field. We'll learn from this and get better".

California Baptist will now return to Southern California for training before returning to Utah next week with a pair of WAC games, facing off against Southern Utah and then Utah Tech.
