Hauck Leads Lancers Past Thunderbirds on Thursday

CEDAR CITY, UT--- California Baptist women's soccer program returned to Utah on Thursday afternoon to face off against Southern Utah and held strong during a very intense match for a 1-0 victory. Kaylee Hauck played hero for the Lancers after scoring early in the first half to help CBU maintain its second-place spot in the Western Athletic Conference standings. California Baptist improves to 3-1 in WAC play and is now 7-6-1 this season.
The first 10 minutes of the match were all CBU as the Lancers began pressing the SUU backline early and testing the Thunderbird keeper. A beautiful give-and-go connect on the left side of the field between Ava Westlund and Anja Jestrovic, who passed it onto Hauck for a run down the line. The senior forward got away from her defender and slotted a perfect ball back post for an early lead that the Lancers never relinquished, earning her third goal of the season.
From then on, the match was full of fouls and intensity as both squads battled back and forth. The most controversial call of the day came late in the second half after Westlund was bulldozed at the top of the 18-yard box, which resulted in a red card for the SUU defender, but it was not called a penalty kick. CBU was unable to convert on the free kick, but held on for the 1-0 victory.
"Offensively we did a better job keeping possession through each third and creating dangerous scoring opportunities. The score should have been higher but credit their keeper for coming up with a few big saves," said Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Defensively we were more organized and dealt with their attack well. Mikayla did a great job controlling her box. We had to work through 5,843 feet of elevation and a rain storm in the second half. Proud of our team for 90 minutes of gritty work. This is an important 3 points on the road and now we turn out attention to our next opponent this weekend".
California Baptist will rest and prepare for its last leg of the road trip as it heads to Utah Tech on Sunday afternoon.
