BERKELEY, Calif. --- California Baptist University got into the winning column Saturday evening, beating Pomona Pitzer 15-7 for the Lancers first win of the season.
"It's always great to get the first win of the season," Head Coach Jacob Medina said.
Petra Kovacs tallied her second hat-trick of the day and third straight game of three or more goals.
Four Lancers scored their first goals of the season, including Laura Kocsis, Molly Gritchen and Briana Tryon who each tallied two apiece. Tania Acavedo also found the back of the net twice.
Taking a 3-1 lead after the first quarter, CBU used a 9-3 run in the third and fourth to put the game out of reach.
Doris Tran, Alyssa Birch, Mallory Montano and Christina Webb also each scored a goal.
"Overall, it was a solid opening weekend to the season and we learned a lot about our team and what adjustments we need to make moving forward," Medina said. "We have a talented team that will continue to improve as a unit."
Goalkeepers Camryn Rogers and Leticia Perez split halves again, with Rogers tallying four saves in the first and four for Perez in the second.
Earlier in the day, CBU was outscored three goals in both the second and fourth quarters and lost 12-6 to No. 5 San Jose State in their second game at the Cal Tournament.
Kovacs added another hat-trick to her season, after scoring four goals against Cal yesterday.
Trailing just one after the first, CBU was outscored 5-2 in the second quarter allowing the Spartans the four-goal advantage at half. Holding SJSU scoreless in the third, the Lancers were only able to make up one goal before being outscored 5-2 again in the fourth.
For CBU, Birch, Webb and Raine Paul each found the back of the net. It was Paul's first collegiate goal of her career.
Freshman goalkeeper Perez stepped in between the posts in the second half and tallied nine saves. Rogers recorded three saves in the opening half.
With the split, CBU returns home with a record of 1-2. They will host the Lancer Mini Invite in the Lancer Aquatics Center, starting with CSU Bakersfield at 10 a.m. on Feb. 4.
