WESTWOOD, Calif. --- Despite two goals each from Kim Latschaw and Petra Kovacs, California Baptist University couldn't hold off No. 3 UCLA, falling 11-5 to the Bruins on Saturday night.
After UCLA ended the first quarter with a 4-0 lead, Latschaw scored her first goal of the game and season with 5:32 left in the first half to erase any hopes of a shutout for the Bruins.
Latschaw sat out the first tournament of the season at Cal due to a battle with appendicitis. Still struggling with fatigue and getting to full strength over the past two weeks, Latschaw made the outing to Westwood the coming-out party of her junior season.
Kovacs notched her first of two 32 seconds into the second half, closing the Bruins' lead to 6-2.
CBU outscored the Bruins 3-1 in the final quarter, beginning with Mallory Montano's 6-on-5 conversion at 4:32 in the fourth. It was the Lancers' only goal out of five 6-on-5 opportunities.
Latschaw found the back of the net for the second time at 2:58 and Kovacs snuck one last goal in with five seconds remaining.
Goalkeeper Camryn Rogers tallied five saves and two steals.
Now 1-5, CBU has already faced three ranked opponents and will continue on with the tough competition, facing No. 2 USC next Saturday.
As part of CBU's homecoming festivities, the Lancers will be hosting the first Lancer Invite on Feb. 17-18 in the Lacer Aquatics Center. CBU opens up with Vanguard at 11:40 a.m. on Friday.
