
Summer Standouts

In order to stay in form for the spring season, 16 CBU baseball players competed in seven different competitive amateur summer leagues from around the country.
Zach Esquerra powered his way through the Alaska Baseball League, picking up eight home runs in 35 games. He was one of three CBU athletes to play in the ABL.
Matt Daugherty propelled the Anchorage Glacier Pilots to an ABL championship. Daugherty also won a league championship in 2011 as a member of the Kamuela Paniolos of the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League.
Several players were involved in league All-Star festivities, including Jesse Santana, who was named to the Boise Summer League All-Star team, and Nathan Antoun, who was a competitor in the Orange County Collegiate League home run derby.
Matt Thrall also won a 2012 summer league championship as a member of the Hawaii Aliis, part of the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League.
Below is a complete list of highlights from all of the 16 of the 2012 summer league players.
Patrick Gonzalez - Mongolian Mudcats (Boise Summer League)
- Hit .260 in 22 games, starting 18 of them
- Was a perfect 7-7 in stolen base attempts
- Picked up 19 hits, scored 16 runs and drove in six
Jesse Santana - Pepsi Wolfpack (Boise Summer League)
- Hit .255 in 28 games, starting 24 of them
- Scored 17 runs, drove in 17 runs and walked 17 times
- Went 1-1 with seven strikeouts in 8.1 innings pitched
- Named to the 2012 Boise Summer League All-Star team
Zach Esquerra - Anchorage Bucs (Alaska Baseball League)
- Hit .295 in 35 games for the Bucs
- Tied for second in the league with eight home runs
- Picked up 28 RBI, five doubles and four triples
Matt Daugherty - Anchorage Glacier Pilots (Alaska Baseball League)
- Hit .261 in 36 games
- Led the Glacier Pilots to the 2012 Alaska Baseball League title
- Hit three home runs and drove in eight in 134 AB
- Had a 2.35 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched
Caleb Dirks - Chugiak Chinooks (Alaska Baseball League)
- Had a 4.53 ERA in 45.2 innings pitched
- Recorded a 2-3 record in nine games, starting seven of them
- Struck out 35, while walking 19
Matt Thrall - Hawaii Aliis (Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League)
- Won the HCBL championship as a member of the Aliis
- Hit .237 in 24 games played
- Stole three bases on four attempts and scored ten runs
- Hit one home run and picked up 14 RBI
David Herd - Kamuela Paniolos (Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League)
- Tied for the third most strikeouts in the league (30)
- Led the Paniolos with a 3.81 ERA and 4 wins
- Held opponents to a .282 batting average
Luke Esquerra - Palm Springs Power (Southern California Collegiate Baseball League)
- Palm Springs Power won the SCCBL championship for the second straight season
- Hit .333 over 15 games, hitting one home run and driving in 13 RBI
- Scored 14 runs while stealing 4 bases
Blair Moore - Makato Moondogs (Northwoods League)
- Hit .345 in 27 games for the Moondogs
- Scored 19 runs and drove in 16
- Hit six doubles, stole three bases and hit one home run
- This was Moore's second season with the Moondogs
Ethan Mack - Los Angeles Thrashers (Southern California Collegiate Baseball League)
- Pitched two innings for the Thrashers
- Recorded a 4.50 ERA in one appearance
Garrett Trevino - Los Angeles Thrashers (Southern California Collegiate Baseball League)
- Hit .245 in 16 games with the Thrashers, starting 15 of them
- Picked up 13 hits in 53 AB
- Stole two bases on two attempts
Steven Pena - Rancho Belago Rockets (Western Baseball Association)
- Led the Rockets to a 2-2 record in the Western Baseball Association
- No other stats available
Michael Garcia - Rancho Belago Rockets (Western Baseball Association)
- Led the Rockets to a 2-2 record in the Western Baseball Association

Michael Fagan - Orange County Waves (Orange County Collegiate League)
- Hit .339 in 17 games for the Waves

- Participated in the 2012 All-Star Home Run Derby
- Hit .241 in 17 games
- Hit three home runs and recorded 20 RBI
- Scored seven runs and stole one base
Travis Sais - Orange County Waves (Orange County Collegiate League)
- Hit .341 in 16 games
- Hit one home run and drove in eight RBI
- Picked up 14 hits and two walks
