OAKLAND, Calif. – Rain and fog wouldn't deter California Baptist University Saturday afternoon as it splashed to a 4-1 win over Holy Names, hitting the century mark for head coach Kristen St. Clair.
“The team did really well in such adverse conditions,” said St. Clair, who now holds a 100-28-8 coaching record. “I was impressed with their work ethic and resolve to execute and get the result we were looking for in the midst of extreme fog and rain.”
Bernadette Witz and Kelly Jenks each scored two goals a piece to lift the Lancers to a 2-0 PacWest record and even on the season at 3-3.
“[Bernadette Witz and Jenks] certainly executed well for us, but it was also a good team effort,” said St. Clair. “We're continuing to make progress each game.”
Jenks registered the first shot of the game at the third minute mark, getting a good look from close range to force HNU goalkeeper Jenni Dooley to make her first save of the day.
Less than two minutes later, Dooley blocked Lauren Wallberg's shot, but surrendered a rebound in the box. Bernadette Witz sent the ball home to give the Lancers an early 1-0 lead.
Due to unplayable conditions, both teams had to wait out a rain delay 15 minutes into competition. When play resumed, neither team found the back of the net to keep the score 1-0 in favor of CBU at halftime.
Bernadette Witz added her fifth goal of the season—four of which have occurred in the past two games—to extend CBU's lead to 2-0. Silvia Sanchez sent a cross into the box, connecting with Bernadette Witz's head, who redirected it to the back post.
Jenks added another insurance goal four minutes later, beating a Hawk defender to the ball. Jenks collected the ball out of the air and volleyed it into the back of the net to put the Lancers up 3-0 with just over 20 minutes left to play.
The Hawks' Alyssa Flores took advantage of a scrum in the box, tapping in HNU's lone goal in the 71st minute.
With 15 minutes left to play, Jenks struck again, driving a header past Dooley off a cross from Rachel Witz. CBU kept the Hawks out of dangerous territory to ride out the 4-1 victory.
The Hawks fall to 1-4 overall and remain winless in conference at 0-2.
CBU will head back out on the road, traveling to Fresno Pacific on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. matchup.
