Slippery Battle

LAIE, Hawaii — From the start of the game until halftime, rain poured down on the field at BYU-Hawaii, making difficult playing conditions for California Baptist University. The Lancers battled from behind, but ultimately dropped a close 2-1 decision Monday afternoon.
CBU falls to 3-5-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference. BYUH improves to 4-4-1 overall and keeps its perfect PacWest record intact at 4-0.
The Seasiders slipped in the first goal of the game just six minutes into the first half, bending a free kick around the Lancers' wall to skip it into the back of the net.
Despite the early goal, the Lancers continued to battle in the unfavorable conditions. CBU turned on the attack right after the goal, firing off three shots in a span of three minutes, two of which were on frame. Josue Soto gave the Lancers an opportunity in the 13th minute, forcing the Seasiders' goalkeeper to parry it wide for a corner kick. Daniel Westholm got a piece off Soto's corner, but just missed the net.
Coming out of the half, CBU was hungry for an equalizer. Aidan Apodaca gave the Lancers what they were looking for in the 51st minute, finishing a scramble in the box after the Seasiders couldn't clear the ball away. Soto started the scramble, sending a corner kick into the box where the ball was sent back up the middle to Apodaca, who finished it to tie the game 1-1.
As time was winding down, and neither team wanted to go into extra time, BYUH broke the tie in the 79th minute to take a 2-1 lead. The Lancers fought to find another equalizing goal, but time ran out to end the game 2-1 in favor of the Seasiders.
CBU gets two days of rest before taking on Hawaii-Hilo on another island on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. HST. The Lancers return from the Big Island back to Oahu after the game with the Vulcans to conclude their Hawaiian trip with a game at Hawaii Pacific on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. HST.
