Power On Offense

CLAREMONT, Calif.--- The Lancers showed a powerful offense in the Claremont Convergence Tournament with non-conference wins over No. 7-ranked (Div. III) Redlands (13-4) and No. 10-ranked (CWPA) Gannon (19-7).
The Lancers improve to 9-8 on the season, while Redlands falls to 1-8 and Gannon to 5-4.
On defense, CBU pressed early and steadily in the first quarter of the match-up against Redlands with five goals to the Bulldogs' one.
Morgan Barrows had the first goal of the game less than two minutes in, followed by a five-meter goal from Laura Kocsis to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead. After a goal by Redlands, Meg Claypool, Briana Tryon, Hannah Evans and Raine Paul found scoring opportunities to add to the first-quarter scoring with Paul's goal happening just 20 seconds before the first-quarter buzzer.
With the score at 5-1 going into the second quarter, the defense maintained that score until Kaitlyn Persky found the back of the cage with just over four minutes left in the half. The Bulldogs found an opportunity to score but couldn't hold CBU's dominating offense from scoring four more times before the clock struck zero heading into halftime. Evans, Sydney Iturraran, Kocsis, and Tryon contributed to the five total goals in the second quarter
The Bulldogs managed a goal to start off the second half, but the quarter wouldn't end until freshman Paizlee Dreyer put one past the Bulldogs goalie, Julie Lupfer to bring the Lancers to an 11-3 lead.
Redlands player Taylor Christie scored first in the fourth quarter but Iturraran and Persky finalized the Lancers' scoring with two goals in the final quarter ending the game 13-4.
Lina Medeiros posted a season-high 13 saves, along with two steals, in the cage for CBU against the Bulldogs.
The Lancers weren't done on offense, as they started the nightcap with seven first-quarter goals, allowing just one to the Lady Knights.
Gannon found three scoring opportunities in the second quarter, but CBU added four more goals before heading into the half with a 12-4 lead.
The Lady Knights couldn't compete against the CBU defense with Medeiros back in the cage, putting up another 11 saves and two steals for the Lancers. CBU went on to score seven more goals through the third and fourth quarters and held the Lady Knights to a scoreless second half.
Aside from four goals from Evans, the scoring was balanced, as usual, for CBU with 12 Lancers contributing to the 19 total goals.
The Lancers are back at home against Bucknell University Tuesday, March 11 at 5 p.m.
