LOS ANGELES — Going up against two of the best teams in all of NCAA, California Baptist University expected a challenge. The Lancers couldn't hold off the powerhouses, however, falling 16-5 to host UCLA and 24-3 to USC.
"Playing both of UCLA and USC in the same day is tough, but it was a good learning experience for us," head coach Jon Miller.
CBU opens the season 0-2 with the pair of losses, while the No. 2 Bruins and No. 4 Trojans both start the year 2-0.
Valerie Spezzaferri led the team with three goals on the day. Samantha Banks, Kaitlyn Persky, Paizlee Dryer, Raine Paul and Courtney Menard each added a goal for CBU. Meghan Rowland had 17 saves on the day in the cage.
UCLA scored the first two goals in the first contest, but Persky cut the lead in half with her first goal of the season.
The Bruins built up their lead to 6-1 before Dryer ended the run with a goal on exclusion. It wasn't enough for the visitors to create their own run as the Lancers found themselves trailing 11-2 at halftime.
CBU gave its best effort in the third frame, netting three goals in the eight minutes. Banks banked the first point of the period in the run of play, but UCLA responded with two goals. Spezzaferri scored the remaining two goals of the game in the third, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Bruins as they took the 16-5 result.
In the nightcap, the Trojans took the lead for the first two periods, Paul scored the first goal on exclusion for the Lancers in the third period with less than five minutes remaining, but USC had already established a heavy 20-1 cushion.
The Lancers netted two goals in the last quarter, but couldn't overcome the Trojans. Within the first two minutes of the frame, Spezzaferri scored a goal on exclusion, making it her third goal of the season. Menard scored the last goal with a minute remaining but ultimately fell 24-3 to USC.
"Spezzaferri really stepped up for us on offense with two goals against UCLA and one against USC," said Miller. "I think we played hard, but just made too many mistakes that both teams took advantage of."
The Lancers head to Santa Barbara for a two-day tournament on Jan. 23-24, competing against Arizona State University, San Jose State, Sonoma State and UCLA during the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational.
