MALIBU, Calif. – After missing the first meet of the season, Alena Rumiantceva was anxious to get back in the competitive waters with California Baptist University Saturday.
Â
Rumiantceva and the rest of the Lancers had a challenge in their path at the Malibu Invite, which included NCAA Division I squads Pepperdine, Bakersfield and Loyola Marymount, in addition to Concordia and Cal Lutheran. Despite no team scores being kept, CBU welcomed the obstacle and produced several highlight swims, with Rumiantceva, Yosita Hapsari and Andrea Laliena each grabbing at least one win.
Â
Chief among them was Rumiantceva notching two Division II B-cut times in breaststroke events in her season debut. The junior picked up a win in the 200-yard breast in two minutes, 19.21 seconds and then touched second in the 100 breast in 1:04.99, with both earning her consideration for the NCAA Championships.
Â
"She just needed to get back in there and race again," Coach Rick Rowland said. "She is getting back into race mode after being out last week."
Â
Rumiantceva had a busy day, also going runner-up in the 50 breast (20.68) and taking fifth in the 100 individual medley (1:01.33).
Â
"She was fairly happy with her swims, technically she will make some adjustments and get back in shape but it's a good early start for her," Rowland said. "She will be one of the premier breaststrokes this year, just like last season."
Â
While one veteran continued to prove her worth, a fresh face was turning heads for the Lancers. Laliena, a true freshman, filled that role for CBU by winning two backstroke events and taking second in another. The native of Spain and Santa Margarita Catholic High graduate won both the 50 (27.62) and 100 backs (1:00.54) before touching second in the 200 (2:08.56).
Â
"She looked really strong today, her underwaters were very strong," Rowland said. "I was very happy with her 50 and 100 back. She knew she had to attack it underwater and that really helped her."
Â
Not to be forgotten, Hapsari produced five top-three swims. She spoiled Laliena sweeping the backstrokes with a win in the 200 (2:06.96) and then took second in the 50 free (24.50). Hapsari rounded things out with bronze-medal performances in the 50 butterfly (26.86), 100 IM (1:00.54) and 200 free (1:54.51).
Â
"Yosita can swim just about anything, she has four very strong strokes and has really shown depth in quite a few events," Rowland said. "We will put her where we need her, you can expect that this season. I think this is going to be a good year for Yosita, I am excited to see what happens for her."
 Â
CBU dominated several swims on the day, none more noticeable than the 200 back when Hapsari, Laliena and Kylie Mihld (2:08.67) went 1-2-3 and Christie Halverson took fifth (2:12.16).
Â
In the 50 fly, Jenna Frazer took second (26.81), Hapsari third (26.86) and Kristina Tchernyshev fifth (26.92). Tchernyshev would grab a third-place finish in the 100 fly (59.49). Courtney Chacon (2:10.54) and Sara Yoshii (2:11.34) went four-five in the 200 butterfly.
Â
Next up for CBU is its alumni meet Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
