RESULTS
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Despite being shorthanded and up against a formidable NCAA Division I opponent, California Baptist University came out determined and achieved its fair share of individual success against Bakersfield Saturday afternoon.
In CBU's home opener at the Lancer Aquatics Center, the Roadrunners pulled out the victory, 208-92, after the Lancers were down 10 athletes. Among the missing with injuries or bereavement were three reigning NCAA Division II All-Americans and some of CBU's most prolific scorers in Alena Rumiantceva, Bre Schlenger and Yosita Hapsari.
"It was a rough day being out 10 girls," Coach Rick Rowland said. "Considering all things, we still had some strong swims and dives. We look forward to swimming against [Bakersfield] next year."
Nevertheless, the Lancers dominated several events and received two individual victories from Christie Halverson and Courtney Chacon in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200 butterfly, respectively.
"It's good being back home," Halverson said. "I like swimming here in meets because this is where we always practice and it's where we're most comfortable. Some of our best swims happen here."
Chacon's win spearheaded CBU's most impressive event of the day, as it went one-two in the 200 fly, with Sara Yoshii just being out touched by her teammate. Chacon's time of two minutes, 10.59 seconds was less than half a second better than Yoshii's 2:11.15.
Meanwhile, Halverson won the 1,000 free with plenty of time to spare, with her 10:31.06 being 4.4 seconds faster than runner-up Emily Vose of Bakersfield (10:35.46). Halverson also produced two more top-three individual finishes in the 500 free (second, 5:11.50) and 100 free (third, 55.01) – serving as her team's highest point scorer.
"God has just blessed me with such a great season," Halverson said. "I have been praying a lot before competitions, and I really just want to glorify Him with this season. I feel I have been able to realize my full potential this year. I am just learning a lot about involving myself in prayer before races and that has helped me a lot."
Halverson's 400-freestyle relay team of Tessa Olson, Kristina Tchernyschev and Robin Smallwood also took second in 3:42.24. The 200-medley relay squad of Smallwood, Tchernyschev, Kylie Mihld and Hailey Golden nearly upset the Roadrunners, but were out touched by just .03 of a tick, with a time of 1:49.61.
Back in individual competition, CBU produced two of the top-three finishes in the 100 breast and butterfly. Smallwood (1:07.29) and Melody Coleman (1:09.64) went two-three in the breast, while Tchernyschev (58.54) and Yoshii (1:01.47) took silver and bronze in the fly, with Tchernyschev just missing gold by .09 of a second.
Smallwood put together another runner-up performance in the 200 breast (2:27.68). Mihld also took second place in the 200 back (2:11.60).
While the Lancers were dealing with their fair share of injuries, they welcomed back one athlete and reigning All-American who had been dealing with injuries the first two-plus months of the season in diver Lauren Skinner.
In her season debut, Skinner was the Lancers' top placer on the one- and three-meter dives. She amassed 211.12 points on the three and 202.42 on the one.
"It is so nice [having Skinner back]," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "She's dove for two days and she's smoking it, she's doing so well. I think we are in a good place and I am excited to see her get into her optional dives."
CBU's swim and dive teams will split up next week. The swimmers will head to Hayward, Calif., for the Cal State East Bay Christmas Invite Thursday to Saturday. Back in Riverside, the divers will compete in their own Inland Empire Dive Invite back at the Lancer Aquatics Center on Saturday at 11 a.m.
"This is a great competition, and I look forward to going against [Bakersfield] next week," Couto said. "I think we are in a good place."
