SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Before California Baptist University could dive into the Christmas break, it finished up Cal State East Bay's Christmas Invite at Santa Rosa Junior College's Quinn Aquatic Center this weekend.
It was a success through and through for the Lancers, who claimed 12 more victories in the final two days of the invite and a total of 12 NCAA Division II B-cuts in the process. CBU also picked up the team victory over the host Pioneers and four-team field with 1,187 points. CSUEB took second with 1,050 points, while Fresno Pacific (681) and UC Santa Cruz (363) rounded out the teams.
There were several standout performances, starting with Yosita Hapsari producing seven top-three finishes, four victories and three consideration times in the final two days of the Invite. She won the 200-yard freestyle in a winning and B-cut time of one minute, 52.77 seconds and was victorious in the 100 individual medley in in 58.29 and took third in the 100 (58.82) and 200 backstrokes (2:07.49).
In relays, the junior also grabbed victorious consideration marks in the 800 freestyle (7:40.55), along with Christie Halverson, Kylie Mihld and Sara Yoshii, and 200 medley (1:46.13) with Andrea Laliena, Alena Rumiantceva and Kristina Tchernyschev. Her team of Hailey Golden, Robin Smallwood and Tessa Olson took second in the 400-free relay but clocked in under the consideration time with a 3:30.67.
Halverson was as strong individually as she was in relays over the weekend. She won the 1650 free and 400 individual medley in B-times of 17:17.71 and 4:31.09, respectively, and also took second in the 200 free (1:54.26).
Rumiantceva also nabbed two consideration times and was on the verge of more automatic qualifiers down the stretch, as she won the 200 breast in 2:15.61 and took second in the 100 breast in 1:02.45. She also went runner-up in the 100 IM (58.58).
Tchernyschev clinched her B-cut in the 100 butterfly (56.13), which was good for second place. Yoshii took third in the race (58.20), which was just some of the valuable points she provided CBU. She also took second in the 200 fly (2:07.40).
Courtney Chacon gifted the Lancers with tremendous depth, as well, winning the 200 fly (2:06.35) and going runner-up in the 1650 free (17:41.37). Mihld would also finish second in the 200 back (2:06.37) and 400 IM (4:31.91), nearly grabbing a consideration time in the medley.
Now in the midst of the Christmas break, CBU will rest up before hosting three-straight duals over an eight-day span with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Fresno Pacific/Concordia and UC San Diego. The Sunbirds come to Riverside on January 8th at 2 p.m.
