POMONA, Calif. – Traveling to another top-10 team's home field, California Baptist University found itself in a familiar spot, in need of a comeback in its non-conference series opener with ninth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona Thursday.
After facing a three-run deficit since the second inning, CBU launched a furious comeback that put the potential go-ahead run on base in the top of the ninth. Broncos closer J.J. Franklin came up with two big strikeouts, however, to seal the 3-2 victory at Scolinos Field.
CPP escaped with the victory to improve to 9-2 this year, while the Lancers are now 5-6. Both teams will play a doubleheader at James W. Totman Stadium Friday starting at 3 p.m.
CBU's comeback attempt started in the top of the eighth. Zack Norris led off the inning with a single up the middle, and then moved over to third on a clutch 3-2 double down the left-field line from Andy Crowley, who has base hits in all 11 games this season. Stephen Lohr, who has hits in the last 10 games, brought home Norris with a grounder to shortstop.
With two outs and Crowley at third, the Lancers were in need of another big hit. Cal Poly Pomona countered and brought out Franklin, its closer, to face Antonio Chavarria. Chavarria won out and tripled into right field on an 0-1 count to score Crowley and bring CBU within 3-2. Franklin was able to keep the Broncos in front, though, as he ended the inning with a strike out.
In the bottom half of the inning, CPP threatened to take another multi-run lead when it loaded the bases with one out. Nick Bruno came up for the Broncos and bounced a grounder to second base, with Lancer fielder Luke Navigato wisely getting the force out at home. With two outs, the Broncos' Michael Erb smashed a dangerous ball into left field but freshman Ryan Williams snagged the liner to end the inning and keep CBU within one.
Pinch hitter A.J. David put the tying run on board in the ninth for the Lancers, with a one-out single through the hole between first and second base. A single into center field from Brian Ruhm put the potential go-ahead run on first, but Franklin countered with two strikeouts to strand the runners and end the game.
Adam Hofacket gave the Lancers another quality start on the mound. He threw 7 1/3 innings and allowed four hits, four walks and three runs, while striking out four. Once again, the junior right-hander got better as the game went along, shutting out Cal Poly Pomona from the third to the seventh innings. Norris went 2-for-5 with a run scored for CBU, which also received a triple from Williams for his first career hit.
