STEPHENVILLE, TX--- California Baptist dropped its first series of the season this weekend after falling to Tarleton State on Sunday afternoon, 7-6. The Sunday loss is also the first time this season that the Lancers have lost two games in a row, and it creates a tight first-place run in the Western Athletic Conference standings. CBU moves to 31-9 on the season and is now 5-4 in conference play.
The top of the second inning proved to be one of the most fruitful for the Lancers as Ben Castelli kick-started the scoring with a solo shot before Ryder Dykstra knocked an RBI double for a 2-0 lead. Small ball for the Texans gifted them a pair of tying runs before Bryce McFeely would launch his 12th home run of the season for another CBU lead. Tarleton was relentless and figured out CBU's bullpen, managing to tally four runs across the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.
California Baptist did not go quietly and began a comeback in the ninth inning, starting with an RBI Connor Ross double that scored Chris Ramirez. Gary Adcock's team loaded the bases with one out, and Riley Hunsaker took a page out of TSU's book with an RBI single into right field to cut into that Texan lead. Down by two and the bases still juiced, Matt Chavez would knock a foul fly ball that was caught but went just far enough to bring home another runner. That would be where the magic ended for the Lancers as a flyout to left field ultimately ended the game, and CBU's impressive series-win streak this season.
California Baptist left 12 runners on base through the course of the nine innings, including two in the ninth. Ben Castelli went three-for-four at the plate, while the CBU pitching staff strung together 11 strikeouts but dished out seven free passes to the Texans.
The Lancers will now turn their attention to tomorrow evening as they welcome UC Santa Barbara, presented by Astrana Health, to Totman Stadium for a midweek match-up.
