RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Despite a delay in the nightcap due to lightning in the distance, No. 13-ranked California Baptist University brought the spark in the first to take a 7-1 victory over Academy of Art. The Lancers backed it up with a 4-1 win in the late game.
CBU improves to 28-6 on the season, 17-3 in the PacWest. The Urban Knights drop to 12-13 overall, 7-5 in conference, still sitting behind the Lancers in the conference standings.
ArtU opened with the first hit of the day, but Loie Kesterson kept the Urban Knights off the board by snagging a line drive and tossing it over to Kailey Willingham to end the inning.
CBU capitalized first at the plate as Savannah Miller took advantage of a wild pitch to put the Lancers in front 1-0.
Krista Mann doubled the lead in the bottom of the third, blasting a long ball over the fence at left center.
The Urban Knights responded in the next inning, hitting a home run of their own to cut the margin to just one run, 2-1.
CBU had a response of its own, however, exploding in the bottom half of the inning to score five runs on five hits and one error. Jacque Lopez started things off with a single to left center and was joined on base by Sarah Murphy and Jenna Lieber as the Lancers loaded up the bases for Jordan Mowatt. The junior cleared them with a double to the gap left of center, putting CBU in front 5-1.
Miller kept the big inning going, sending the third homer of the game out of John C. Funk Stadium to score her and Mowatt and give the Lancers the 7-1 lead they never surrendered.
In the nightcap, the two teams managed to get one complete inning in and almost got the top of the second, but a lightning delay was put in place to halt the game with two outs on the board.
Almost an hour later, the game resumed where it left off and the Lancers ended the long inning with a quick out.
ArtU kept the home team off the scoreboard for the bottom half of the inning, but couldn't keep the Lancers quiet for much longer. With Miller on first with a base hit and Mann knocked her in with a double that went all the way to the wall. The Urban Knights found three-straight outs to end the inning before CBU could do more damage.
CBU brought more spark in the fourth as Tayler Castro blasted a no-doubter over the fence at left center to double her team's lead to 2-0. Another wild pitch made it 3-0 and Miller gave Mowatt the green light to score the fourth run.
Willingham led off with a single and Chelsea Rosario took over running at first. Rosario proceeded to steal second before the Urban Knights ended the inning to leave her stranded.
ArtU broke the scoreless drought in the top of the sixth, but Murphy and Miller combined to prevent the Urban Knights from scoring a second. The visitors held off the Lancers in the bottom of the frame to go back on offense.
Needing to score three runs to keep the game alive, ArtU got a hit off Kayla Hatch, but lined into a double play to end the game 4-1 in favor of the Lancers.
CBU remains at home for another solo doubleheader against rival Azusa Pacific on Saturday at noon.
