RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Trying to keep pace in the competitive PacWest Conference, the 13th-ranked California Baptist University Lancers came into a big doubleheader with rival Azusa Pacific Saturday afternoon at Funk Stadium.
CBU swept the doubleheader in dramatic fashion on scores of 3-1 and 6-5, with the finale coming on a dramatic two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. The Lancers improve to 30-6, 19-3 in conference, while the Cougars slip to 18-16, 12-11.
In the first game of the doubleheader, CBU started strong by scoring a run in the first inning. Savannah Miller led off the frame with a double to left center and Kailey Willingham followed with a run-scoring single up the middle.
The Lancers got some insurance with two runs in the fifth inning, which was also led off by a Tayler Castro double. Jenna Lieber was then hit by a pitch and a bunt single from Jordan Mowatt loaded the bases for Miller. Miller scored Castro with a grounder to second base and Krista Mann came up with a huge two-out into right to score pinch-runner Sara Murphy.
The Cougars would score one in the top of the ninth, but that's all they would get off of Loie Kesterson. She improved to 15-4 with and allowed just one unearned run on nine hits, while striking out four and not giving up a walk.
Saturday's finale proved to be a test of resolve for the Lancers, as they went into the bottom of the seventh down 5-0. The Cougars came out strong scoring four runs in the first two innings and another in the seventh.
In the seventh, Jacque Lopez and Castro drew one-out walks to put some pressure on APU. The Cougars got the second out but Murphy was hit by a pitch to keep the inning going. Mowatt singled home Lopez and Castro to pull CBU within 5-2. A walk to Miller loaded the bases again, and Mann brought home Murphy with a bases-loaded walk. Ashley DeVaere delivered the big blow of the inning, doubling into center field to tie things up at 5-5.
After a scoreless top of the eighth, Nicole Hennessey laid down a one-out bunt single for the Lancers in the bottom half. Murphy singled to third to put two runners on and Mowatt moved both runners up with a grounder to second. Miller was the hero, driving in Hennessey with a single into center field for the walk-off winner.
Lancer pitcher Kayla Hatch had five strikeouts in the second game, while allowing five hits and two walks. She went the distance for CBU, with two of her runs being unearned.
Now, the Lancers take a break from the PacWest and head to visit nearby Cal State San Bernardino, which currently stands at 17-14.
