De Nava’s Career Night Captures Season Sweep of UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE --- The second meeting of Riverside's two Division I universities took place on Thursday night at John C. Funk Stadium. Highlighted by one of Riverside's own, the Lancers rallied late to pull off a 2-1 win and capture the season sweep of their crosstown rivals, UC Riverside.
Thursday's victory moves the Lancers to 35-14, while the Highlanders drop to 5-30.
Riverside native Miranda De Nava was the star of the show, as she picked up her 14th victory of the season behind a complete game effort. De Nava struck out 13 batters, a new career high, surpassing the CBU Division I era record for single-game strikeouts that she set earlier this season.
On top of the single-game record, De Nava also broke another record for the CBU staff, as the Lancers now have 254 punchouts as a team, establishing a new DI era season record.
Even with De Nava dealing in the circle, it was the Highlanders to get on the board first, doing so in the sixth with an RBI double. That was one of four hits UCR managed to get on De Nava, who ended the game with no walks and one hit batter.
The Lancers answered the UCR run quickly, starting with Makayla Medellin, who tripled to right center field to give the Lancers a runner in scoring position. Ashlee Annett then walked, placing runners on the corners, creating an opportunity for CBU to use some trickery on the base path. Annett deked a move to second, triggering a throw by the UCR catcher that set up enough time for Medellin to sprint home for the stolen base and game-tying run.
Malachy Russell-Millen then provided the game-winning hit, a double in the gap, that scored Jasmine Goins all the way from first. Goins had entered as a pinch runner.
Russell-Millen ends the week of non-conference action with three hits and six RBI. The Lancers recorded six hits in the win, three of which came from Bella Wellbaum, who finished 3-for-3.
CBU will get the weekend off as they take a break from WAC action. The Lancers will return to conference play next weekend when they travel to Texas for three games at Abilene Christian. CBU currently leads the WAC, with second-place Tarleton State playing Utah Valley this weekend.
The Lancers will be back at home on Tuesday when Cal State Fullerton comes to Riverside.
