Lancers Give No. 8 UCLA a Scare in Westwood
4/14/2026 8:45:00 PM | Softball
Tuesday's loss moves the Lancers to 34-14 in head coach Brandon Telesco's first season.
Senior Malachy Russell-Millen was the offensive star for the Lancers. Russell-Millen provided the first spark of the evening when she hit a bases-clearing double to deep center field, driving in three runs to give the Lancers a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.
The double came one pitch after Ashlee Annett drove in the night's first run on an RBI single.
Russell-Millen went back to work in the third as she hit a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left field to push the Lancers' lead to 6-2. The home run is the sixth of the season for Russell-Millen. Before this season, Russell-Millen had only one Division I home run to her name. She would end the night 2-for-3 with five RBI.

Home runs were the story for the Bruins, a team that entered the night with 134 long balls, the second most in the country. The Bruins added to that total on Tuesday, leaving the yard six times, four of which were solo shots.
The Bruins started their offensive night with a leadoff shot and then added more with a one-out blast two batters later. The third and fourth home runs of the evening came in the bottom of the third, cutting the Lancers' lead to 6-5.
UCLA leveled the game in the fourth on their fifth home run of the night, but the damage could have been more if not for two top-tier defensive plays from the Lancers. The first came on a play at the plate where the Lancers threw out the go-ahead run. The second was thanks to Stevie Robison who made her second diving grab of the night, this time turning it into a double play at second base to end the inning.

The action went into the sixth inning with both sides equal at six before the Bruins finally struck for their first big inning of the night. UCLA plated seven runs in the sixth inning off four hits, including a three-run home run.
Right-hander Madalyn Martin made the start for the Lancers and tossed 2.1 innings before CBU turned to the bullpen. Martin allowed five runs on four hits during her time. Annika Hollingsworth tossed the next 3.2 innings in the circle, assuming the loss that drops her to 5-2.
CBU will return to action on Thursday when UC Riverside returns to John C. Funk Stadium for the second installment of the 2026 Crosstown Showdown. Thursday's game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
