Bye, Bye Sunbirdies

In the first half of the Lancers' nine-and-seven inning doubleheader with Fresno Pacific, the home team bashed four home runs en route to a 12-4 win, with a three-run shot from Alec Morabito serving as the momentum shifter. In the second game, an A.J. David solo shot in the bottom of the sixth -- his second of the day -- proved the difference in a 4-3 CBU win and doubleheader sweep of the Sunbirds. All those homers gave the Lancers a total of 13 over the last seven games.
By rallying back to split the series with FPU, CBU improved to 16-14, 8-4 in the PacWest. The Sunbirds head home with a 20-10, 8-8 record. The Lancers will conclude their season-long, 12-game homestand with Hawaii Hilo. The Vulcans visit for a pair of doubleheaders on Thursday and Friday, with 3 p.m. starts each day.
In addition to Morabito and David, Antonio Chavarria and Ryan Williams each hit dingers in Saturday's opener. Morabito homered in consecutive games, earning himself a start in Saturday's finale, as his first two hits of the season were long balls. For David and Williams, it was their first-career homers with CBU.
David (2-for-4) and Chavarria (2-for-3) each had two-hit games in the opener. Chavarria also doubled, scored four runs and drove in three. Nathan Antoun also went 2-for-3 in Saturday's first game, with a two-RBI triple and two runs scored.
On the mound, Jeremy McDonald dazzled in the opener for CBU. He went 7.2 innings allowing just one earned run on seven hits and no walks. Patrick Gonzales closed out the final 1.1 inning, allowing just two hits, no runs and no walks.
While the score does not show it, Saturday started out with a pitcher's duel. Fresno Pacific broke through to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Andy Crowley recorded CBU's first hit of the game with a leadoff double in the bottom half. Chavarria scored him with the first home run of the day into right center, giving the Lancers a 2-1 edge.
The biggest power surge came in the sixth, as Morabito and David left the yard in a span of three batters. Morabito's was good for three runs, as Chavarria and Antoun reached on a walk and single, respectively. David gave the Lancers a 6-1 lead before the inning was over with a solo shot to left.
Chavarria and Morabito each drove in runs with a double and sacrifice fly, respectively, to up the advantage to 8-1 in the bottom of the seventh.
After the Sunbirds managed to pull within four, 8-4, in the top of the eighth, CBU got itself some more insurance in the bottom half. The first run came on a solo homer to left center from Williams, while Antoun tripled home two runs with a shot down the right-field line and into the corner. Luke Navigato capped the scoring with an RBI double into left.
In the series finale, Morabito delivered in his first start of the season and helped CBU jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, with his big two-out hit following one from Jake Gallaway. A hit by pitch and walk to David and Stephen Lohr, respectively, put two on with no outs in the frame. FPU got the next two outs, but Gallaway refused to let the Sunbirds off unscathed, lining a double to the fence in left center to score two easily. Morabito sent a shot to second base that was too hot to handle, with the ball bouncing into the outfield and scoring Gallaway without issue for a 3-0 Lancer advantage.
A two-run homer in the sixth would bring Fresno Pacific within a run, 3-2. David's leadoff homer in the sixth gave the Lancers a crucial insurance run, as the Sunbirds added another homer in the top of the seventh. Outside of FPU's two big swings, CBU pitcher Adam Hofacket was terrific. He logged the complete game, allowing six hits, one walk and striking out four.
