RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Despite falling into a big early hole, California Baptist University never let up in its series finale with Montana State Billings Saturday afternoon at Totman Stadium.
After the Yellowjackets scored eight runs in the top of the first inning, the Lancers matched the visitors run for run the rest of the way but could not climb out of the deficit in a 15-7 loss. With the series split, CBU moves to 8-10 and MSUB is now 7-13.
Antonio Chavarria and Zack Norris produced big performances in the game for the Lancers. Chavarria was 4-for-5 with a solo homer, double, two runs batted in and two more scored. Norris went 3-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base.
Montana State Billings went up 8-0 in the first, but Chavarria got CBU on the board quickly. With two outs, the junior third baseman turned on a pitch and drove it over the fence in right center field for a solo homer.
A mini two-out rally pulled CBU within 11-2 in the second frame. With two outs, Brian Ruhm singled aboard and then came home on an RBI double from Jake Gallaway. Two more Lancer runs were scored in the bottom of the third, which was led off with a Norris single and continued on an RBI double from Chavarria. Stephen Lohr chased home Chavarria with a single through the middle to bring the score to 12-4.
Two more runs came around in the bottom of the seventh, as the Lancers pulled within seven, 13-6. Andy Crowley reached on a throwing error and moved to third on another Norris single. A wild pitch scored Crowley, which also moved Norris to second. Chavarria advanced Norris over to third with a single, and Nathan Antoun then cashed in the right fielder with a fielder's choice grounder to second base.
CBU kept coming in the bottom of the ninth. Tyler Johnson led off with a single and Chavarria logged his fourth hit with a single into left field to put runners at first and second. Steven Pena drove in Johnson with a double into left to cap the scoring at 15-7.
The Lancers will now transition into PacWest play, as it travels to Academy of Art for a four-game set to be played out Thursday to Saturday.
