WAIPIO, Hawaii — The No. 20-ranked California Baptist University Lancers were unstoppable on defense in the first game against Chaminade and they couldn't be contained offensively in the nightcap. The Lancers grabbed an 8-0 victory in six innings and followed with an explosive 19-2 domination in five innings in the nightcap.
The Lancers improve to 18-5 on the season and 7-1 in the PacWest with the pair of wins. The Silverswords drop to 2-12 overall, 1-5 in conference with the losses.
While just about everyone got in on the action offensively, Krista Mann had a monster of a performance, finishing the day 5-for-7 with three runs and seven RBIs. Ashley DeVaere also had a strong showing at the plate, going 6-for-9 on the day with four runs and three RBIs.
Despite getting in a two-out hole to open the day, CBU took an early 1-0 lead by stringing three hits together in the first.
The Lancers extended their lead in the second, scoring three more runs on five hits. The visitors loaded up the bases, but Chaminade grabbed the force out at home to get one out closer to ending the inning. It wouldn't end in time, however, as DeVaere doubled to right center, scoring two in the process, and Kailey Willingham followed with an RBI single to put CBU in front 4-0.
Chaminade kept the Lancers quiet in the third and fourth, but CBU struck again in the fifth. Again with two outs and bases loaded, Mann started a rally with a single to left to score two more runs. DeVaere followed with another double, making it 7-0, but CBU couldn't grab the eighth run just yet.
The Lancers wouldn't have to wait long, though, as Jacque Lopez led off the top of the sixth with a solo shot over right field. The Silverswords grabbed three-straight outs, but went down in order once again as Loie Kesterson secured the no-hitter by snagging two popups and forcing a ground out. In six innings, Kesterson only allowed one walk, not giving much hope to the Silverswords.
Feeling unstoppable, the Lancers sprung to life in the nightcap. Two throwing errors put CBU on the board 2-0 in the first inning, but it was an explosive third that put the game well out of reach. The Lancers plated 13 runs on 12 hits and two errors.
Savannah Miller, Mann and DeVaere each knocked base hits to open the frame with bases loaded and Willingham sacrificed a fly out to score Miller. A wild pitch added another run and Tayler Castro sent two more runners in on a single through the right side.
Still with one out, Jordan Mowatt also sent a single to right, giving two more runners a chance to safely touch home putting the Lancers up 8-0. They weren't done yet, though, as Mann took her second turn in the batter's box and singled to center with two RBIs. Willingham picked up another RBI with a base hit before the Silverswords could manage to get the second out of the inning.
Castro stepped up to the plate and put the nail in the coffin with a grand slam, turning on a 0-1 count to blast it over the fence at right field — her first collegiate home run — to give CBU a commanding 15-0 lead.
Chaminade shaved one slice off the Lancers' margin with one run in the bottom half of the inning and kept CBU scoreless through the fourth. The Silverswords couldn't hold on in the fifth, however, allowing four more runs.
Taking advantage of a fielding error and a wild pitch, the Lancers made it 16-1 before Mann was once again sent to the plate. She rocketed a double to the gap at right center, scoring two more runs before Chaminade could end the inning.
Despite needing a miracle bottom fifth with 10 runs to keep the game alive, the Silverswords managed to plate one runner but dropped the nightcap 19-2.
Kayla Hatch picked up the win in the circle for the Lancers, striking out three batters in her three innings pitched. Belinda Renne also got in on the action, hurling four knockouts in her two innings of action.
The two teams conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. PST.
