Catastrophic Nightcap

WAIPIO, Hawaii — Despite an explosive offensive showing the day before, No. 20 California Baptist University dropped game one of Saturday's doubleheader 4-3 to Chaminade. The Lancers bounced back in the nightcap with a 15-1 victory.
CBU improves to 19-5 overall, 8-2 in the PacWest, with the split on the day. The Silverswords move to 3-13, 2-6 in conference.
Savannah Miller was the only Lancer to boast more than one hit in the opener, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Tayler Castro went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, with eight RBIs and two runs scored. Sarah Murphy also posted a hit in each of her at-bats (2-for-2) and scored two runs.
CBU loaded up the bases in the top of the first with one out, putting Castro to the plate. The sophomore took a rogue pitch to the body, advancing each of the runners to put the Lancers up 1-0 before the Silverswords could get the third out.
Miller sent a solo shot over the fence at right to double the lead, 2-0, in the second and a wild pitch in the third gave CBU a 3-0 lead.
The Lancers couldn't hold off the Silverswords in the fourth, however, as the home team evened the game with three runs and a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh gave Chaminade the 4-3 victory.
Looking to get back to its explosive ways, CBU loaded up the bases early in the first inning of the nightcap. Jacque Lopez drove in one of the runners on an RBI single and Castro cleared the bases with a three-run homer, just her second of her collegiate career.
Miller batted in another run in the second, giving her team a 5-0 lead, but it wasn't until the third the Lancers put the game out of reach. With bases loaded, Castro stepped up to the plate and drove in three more RBIs with a double to right center. Jenna Lieber followed with a homer over left, putting CBU in front 10-0.
The inning wasn't over yet, though, as a fielding error plated the 11th run of the game and Ashley DeVaere singled to center to allow Krista Mann and Jordan Mowatt to touch home safely. In her second turn at the plate in the inning, Castro added two more RBIs with another double, this time to left center, to make it 15-0.
Three-straight outs later sent CBU back to the batter's box in the top of the fourth, needing to get to the fifth inning to put the mercy rule into effect. The Lancers couldn't put any more on the board in the fifth, while Chaminade broke the drought with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning.
Two-straight strikeouts from Belinda Renne, followed by a grounder, sealed the 15-1 victory to give CBU the 3-1 series win.
CBU continues its Hawaiian trip, heading to Hawaii Pacific for a Monday doubleheader, beginning at 4:00 p.m. PST.
