PHOENIX, AZ --- California Baptist extended its DI era best win streak to 13 games on Friday, as the Lancers picked up two more victories to start the ASU/GCU Invitational. CBU's pitching shined under the hot Phoenix sun, allowing only one run on the day, as they transfer to Tempe tomorrow for the final two games of the weekend.
The Lancers see their overall record jump to 16-3, continuing what is already the best start to a season in the program's Division I era. CBU won its two games on Friday by a combined score of 13-1. Over the course of this 16-game winning streak, the Lancers have outscored opponents 97-30.
CBU is outscoring opponents by 4.2 runs per game this season, putting the Lancers in the top 50 for best scoring margin in Division I.
The Lancers did not allow a run in their first game of the day, a 9-0 shutout of CSU Bakersfield. CBU is now 3-0 against the Roadrunners this season, outscoring CSUB 28-1 in those three contests.
Madalyn Martin earned the win, improving her record to 3-0. Martin allowed only two hits with three strikeouts in her four innings of work. Annika Hollingsworth was called on to get the final three outs of the five-inning game, and she answered with a shutout inning in relief.
CBU got on the board in the top of the first inning thanks to a three-run home run by Makayla Medellin, her second of the season. The first inning rally continued with a two-run single by Berkleigh Tuck to extend the lead to 5-0.
Brooklyn Bassett was next to add an RBI as she hit a solo home run in the third to push the score to 6-0. An inning later, Bassett was back at it as she hit a three-run shot to left field to push the lead to nine. Friday was the first multi-home run day of Bassett's collegiate career, and she is now tied for the team lead with three home runs.
Bassett, Medellin, and Tuck all ended the win with two hits.
Next for the Lancers was CBU's third look at the Big Ten this season, as the day continued with a meeting with the Wisconsin Badgers. Wisconsin was the one to tack on a first-inning run this time as their starting pitcher, Kendra Lewis, gave herself run support with a solo home run.
CBU answered the early Badger run in the third with a sacrifice fly from Kenzie Farrier-Pilon, scoring Jordyn Madrigal. The Lancers also benefited from two Wisconsin errors on the play that allowed Stevie Robison to score as well, giving the Lancers a 2-1 lead.
Two innings later in the fifth, a fielder's choice from Ashlee Annett pushed across Matti Severns to make it 3-1, but again a Wisconsin error extended the play, this time allowing Farrier-Pilon to score and pad CBU's lead to three runs.
Miranda De Nava was given the ball against Wisconsin, and outside of the first inning home run, she did not allow another hit or run during her six innings in the circle. De Nava improves to 5-2 with the win. Emily Darwin tossed a shutout seventh inning to earn her second save of the season.
CBU will continue their Arizona trip tomorrow as action shifts to Tempe and the Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium. The Lancers will begin the day at 12:15 p.m. (PT) when they see Bakersfield again. CBU will then wrap up the weekend at 5:15 p.m. (PT) against Arizona State.
Only Saturday night's dual with the Sun Devils will be streamed on ESPN+.
