KANEOHE, Hawaii — Despite powerful offensive performances just days before, No. 20 California Baptist University couldn't carry it over to open Monday against Hawaii Pacific. The Lancers fell 4-1 in the first game of a doubleheader, but rebounded for a 9-3 victory to split with the Sharks.
CBU improves to 20-6 on the season and 9-3 in the PacWest, while HPU drops to 9-3 overall and an even 2-2 in conference.
The Lancers started the opener by getting on the board first to take an early 1-0 lead. Savannah Miller led off with a single up the middle and was joined on base by Krista Mann, who singled to left center. Ashley DeVaere tucked a base hit inside third base, down the left field line to score Miller, but it was the last time the Lancers would score.
HPU took the lead in the bottom of the third, 2-1, off two hits and tacked on more in the fourth and another in the sixth to take the game 4-1.
In the nightcap, it was HPU to strike first, scoring three runs in the first inning. CBU responded back in its next chance at bat, plating two runs to cut the lead to 3-2. Kailey Willingham led off with a base hit and was sent home on a Jacque Lopez (3-for-4) triple. A wild pitch allowed Lopez to score the Lancers' second run and put the visitors within one.
CBU broke through in the fourth, scoring four runs on four hits. The Lancers loaded up the bases with no outs, but HPU managed to get one out in the next play. Jordan Mowatt stepped up to the plate and rocketed a shot to right center, clearing the bases as she took her spot at third. She scored on a grounder before the Sharks could end the inning with CBU in front 6-3.
With their groove back, the Lancers added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI triple from Tayler Castro and put the game away in the sixth with two more runs. With Miller already on base, Mann laid down a perfect bunt to reach first safely and put her teammate on third. The duo scored to seal the 9-3 win as DeVaere grabbed her 10th double of the season.
The Lancers have one more doubleheader on the island of Oahu, taking on BYU-Hawaii Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. Pacific time, before heading to the Big Island of Hawaii to conclude their trip with a four-game series with UH-Hilo.
