FRESNO, Calif. – California Baptist University closed out the regular season in style, defeating on Fresno Pacific 10-9 on Saturday.
The Lancers head into the Golden Coast Conference (GCC) championships next weekend with a mark of 19-13 overall and 2-4 in GCC, while the Sunbirds sit 7-22 overall and 0-6 in conference.
Four different Lancers got in on the scoring action as Hannah Evans led CBU with six goals on the day. Valerie Spezzaferri scored two goals, while Mallory Montano and Sydney Iturraran both netted a goal each. Meghan Rowland had five saves at the cage for CBU.
"We really came out well in the first half, which led to us building a 5-1 lead in the second quarter, "said head coach Jon Miller.
With less than four minutes remaining in the first period, Evans netted the first two goals for the Lancers and was quickly followed by a Montano goal in the last 13 seconds of the frame to put the Lancers in front 3-1 after the period.
CBU kept pushing on offense as Evans netted three goals to extend her team's lead to three points over FPU. The Sunbirds cut the score to two, 6-4, before Iturraran scored a goal on exclusion to end the half with CBU in front 7-4.
The Lancers had some tough breaks in the third quarter that led the game being tied 8-8. Spezzaferri was the only Lancer to get in the action as the third quarter came to an end.
Determined to swim away with the win, Evans and Spezzaferri teamed up to each score a goal, giving CBU the 10-9 victory.
The Lancers will look to carry momentum from the win with them as they return north to Stockton next week on Thursday, April 23, for the GCC Championships.
