Rain Won't Go Away On Senior Day

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In its final home games of the 2015 season, No. 16 California Baptist University kept its dominant performance over Dominican University of California Saturday afternoon. The Lancers opened with an 8-3 victory but rain put a damper on the sweep as the nightcap was called in the middle of the fourth inning.
Â
CBU stands with a 40-9 record overall, 25-6 in the PacWest, while Dominican falls to 14-30 and 11-18 in conference with two official games left on the docket.
Â
Like they did in the late game the day before, the Lancers jumped in front by two in the first inning of the early game. With the bases loaded and no outs, Kailey Willingham drew ball four to walk in her first RBI of the day and Jenna Lieber walked in another one to give CBU the 2-0 lead.
Â
Dominican responded in its next chance in the batter's box, scoring one run on two hits. The Penguins had bases loaded, threatening to tie the game up, but Krista Mann snagged a pop up to end the inning before they could do more damage.
Â
CBU extended its lead in the third, scoring two more runs on one hit. The Penguins grabbed two outs, but two-out rallies aren't rare when it comes to Lancer softball. In her first start of the season, Brittany Cody drilled a base hit to right, scoring the runners at second and third.
Â
The Penguins answered once more in their next chance at the plate, but Loie Kesterson only allowed one run, scooping up a grounder to end the inning.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, CBU loaded up the bases once more, allowing Savannah Miller to blast her second grand slam in as many days. Despite a 3-0 count, Miller liked what she saw on pitch four and turned on it, just sending it over the fence at left center to make it 8-2.
Â
Dominican tried to cut into the lead in the top of the next frame, but could only get one run, ending the game at 8-3 in favor of the home team.
Â
Following the Senior Day presentation, rain came in the middle of the fourth inning, forcing the umpires to call the game with CBU in front 5-2. Dominican heads to Azusa Pacific on Monday so there may or may not be time to complete the game before postseason action starts.
Â
CBU might not play again until May 7 and currently sits as the third-ranked team in the region, with the top eight teams announced on May 4th's Selection Show at 10 a.m. ET advancing to postseason action.
