STOCKTON, Calif. – For the second game in a row, California Baptist University had a big deficit to overcome early, as it looked to complete a bronze showing in the Golden Coast Conference against the University of the Pacific Saturday.
Again, the Lancers launched a furious comeback in the second half to pull back within contention. It was not enough for CBU to finish the upset over the second-seeded and 15th-ranked Tigers in their home Chris Kjeldsen Pool, who took the game on a 12-9 score.
Even with the loss, CBU completed its finest showing in the GCC Saturday. In just their third year as a conference member, the Lancers took fourth place, finishing fifth the year before. They conclude the season with a 20-15 record. Pacific ends up at 16-10.
After scoring two goals, giving her eight in the tournament's three games, Hannah Evans was named to the All-GCC Tournament team to go along with her first-team selection in the conference.
Despite trailing by as much as five, 6-1, a minute-and-a-half into the second quarter, CBU began fighting its way back in and closed out the first half on a 3-1 run. Jessica Castellano, Evans and Valerie Spezzaferri each contributed to the run.
Evans gave further credibility to the comeback attempt by starting the third quarter with a half-court steal. She took it all the way herself, skipping a shot off the water and into the top shelf to pull the Lancers within two, 7-5, with about 15:30 left in the game.
The Tigers were able to answer back with three goals of their own to build their lead back to 10-5. Castellano netted a deep shot to pull CBU back within four, and with just about 25 seconds left in the third, the Lancers drew a man advantage and Courtney Menard converted it with 11 seconds to go, bringing the score to 10-7 going into the fourth.
Pacific scored first in the fourth, but Evans answered back, muscling her way off two defenders and sending a shot home from two-meters to keep the Lancers in contention at 11-8 with 4:58 remaining. A Tiger goal in the final minutes put the game out of reach for CBU.
Nevertheless, the Lancers kept pushing and Spezzaferri fired one into the top corner at the near post to cap the scoring at 12-9. In addition to her two goals, Spezzaferri finished with three assists. Evans also drew four ejections. Menard had two assists and two steals to go along with her goal.
Meghan Rowland kept her team in it in the cage, making three saves in the opening eight minutes to finish with nine in the game overall.
