Oaks Helps Quakes Bring Home Title

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Former California Baptist University pitcher Trevor Oaks was handed the ball to start one of the biggest games of the year for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

The 2014 PacWest Pitcher of the Year came through, as he often did for the Lancers, throwing 7.1 shutout innings in the Quakes' California League Championship-clinching 5-0 road win over the San Jose Giants Saturday. It completed Rancho Cucamonga's three-game sweep in the best-of-five series, giving the Quakes their first California League title since 1994.

Oaks earned the win after allowing just eight hits, no walks and striking out four. He gave up six hits over the first four innings and then retired 12-straight batters before being taken out in the eighth inning when San Jose collected its final two hits.

It put a cap on a terrific sophomore season in the Los Angeles Dodgers minor-league system for Oaks. He spent the last five games of the season with the class-A advanced Quakes, being promoted from the class-A Great Lakes Loons after 18 games.

Overall, the right hander posted a 2.65 earned-run average and went 8-5 in 23 games and 21 starts. He struck out 74 batters, compared to just 19 walks, in 125.2 innings. He held opposing teams to a .235 batting average and maintained an impressive 1.04 WHIP. In Rancho Cucamonga, Oaks was 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA in five starts. Through 23.2 innings, he struck out 16 and walked five.

Three other Lancers just finished their 2015 season in the minor leagues, with each enjoying successful – if not career-best – seasons.

Caleb Dirks was dominant in 2015, first for the Atlanta Braves and then for the Dodgers after a midseason trade. He bounced between four teams, starting out the season in class-A before ending the year in double-A with the Tulsa Drillers. The right-handed relief pitcher posted a 0.90 ERA in 40 games overall, logging a 3-2 record with six saves and a .194 opposing batting average. In 50 innings, he struck out 64, walked 22 and maintained a 1.14 WHIP. In Tulsa, Dirks picked up a save and recorded a 1.35 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 13.1 innings.

Sharif Othman finished 2015 on the seven-day disabled list with the Miami Marlins' double-A Jacksonville Suns, but it did not stop him from a career year. The catcher batted a personal-best .238 (67-for-282) with 28 runs batted in on the year. He smashed 13 extra-base hits, with nine doubles and three home runs.

Adam Hofacket turned in a solid debut with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's rookie-level Orem Owlz. The pitcher went 4-0 with eight saves, a 3.77 ERA in 26 games and 31 innings. He struck out 23 batters and walked just three.Â
