LA'IE, Hawaii — No. 6 California Baptist University came into Saturday's matchup at BYU-Hawaii looking to keep the good times going in paradise. The Lancers did just that, defeating the Seasiders 89-74 and extending their unbeaten streak to 10 games. The longest winning streak in CBU history is 19 games, set back in 1987-88 under Coach Dave King.
The win moves CBU to 17-1 overall, 9-1 in the PacWest — staying even with No. 24 Azusa Pacific in second place. BYUH falls to 6-9 on the year, 3-7 in conference.
Two Lancers finished the night with more than 20 points to their name. Cassidy Mihalko led all scorers with 26 points (10-for-16), while Kamille Diaz followed with 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting, including 5-for-6 from three-point range. Courtney Nelson rounded out the trio of scorers with double-digits, posting 17 points on the night.
"BYUH came out ready to play today," said Diaz.
Diaz dished out eight assists, while Emma Meriggioli finished with a career-high seven on the night.
Megan Frerer led the rebounding effort for the Lancers, grabbing 11 boards to help CBU out-rebound the Seasiders 47-32. She was just two points away from a double-double. Darsha Burnside — who is battling back from an injury — returned to the rotation once again after seeing limited action on Thursday and grabbed 10 rebounds in just eight minutes.
After a little shaky start where CBU had to play catch up, the Lancers picked up their play to take control of the game. Down 9-5, Nelson broke the Seasider run before they could grab too much momentum. It started CBU off on a 6-0 run, fueled by two Mihalko baskets, to give the Lancers an 11-9 edge.
BYUH continued to stay with CBU, however, even taking back the upper hand halfway through the first quarter, 18-15.
The two teams exchanged leads for the next two minutes, before the Lancers ended the quarter scoring five-straight points to hold a 24-20 margin after the first quarter.
CBU carried momentum over into the second quarter, extending the run to a 12-2 spurt. It gave the Lancers their first double-digit lead of the night, 33-22, before BYUH cut the scoring spree.
The Seasiders managed to chip away at the margin, slicing it back down into single-digits at 35-28.
It got a little hectic as the second quarter ended, with both teams taking advantage of fast break opportunities, but the Lancers walked into halftime with a 47-34 cushion.
"They got going in the beginning, but we knew our defense would help us win the game," said Diaz. "We focused on that in the second half."
CBU opened the second half with the first four points of the third quarter, but BYUH fought to stay with the visitors. The Seasiders cut the score line down to just 10 points heading into the final 10 minutes of the night.
Diaz came into the final quarter banging down three-pointer after three-pointer, hitting her second consecutive one to put CBU in front by 13 two minutes into the frame. The junior guard hit yet another triple at the five-minute mark, finding nothing but net, to all but seal the victory. It gave the Lancers a commanding 20-point lead, 81-61, heading down the stretch.
BYUH kept pushing, however, not letting the Lancers get second looks on offense. The Seasiders cut it to a 14-point margin, but it was the closest they would get as the Lancers grabbed the 89-74 victory.
CBU concludes its Hawaiian getaway on Monday, taking on Hawaii Hilo over on the Big Island, tipping off at 7:00 p.m. Pacific time. The Lancers continue on the road for one more game, heading to local foe Concordia (Irvine) on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 5:30 p.m., before returning to the Van Dyne Gym on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 4:00 p.m.
"We know we have one more game left on our trip," said Diaz. "We're ready for it."
