Soaring Over The Eagles

IRVINE, Calif. — No. 4 California Baptist University came out Saturday night looking to continue to take care of business. The Lancers did just that, grabbing their 12th-straight victory with a 103-64 win over Concordia (Irvine).
CBU improves to an impressive 19-1 on the year, 11-1 in the PacWest — still sitting just one game behind the top spot held by Academy of Art. The Eagles drop to 2-16 overall, 1-12 in conference with the loss.
Courtney Nelson (9-for-14) and Cassidy Mihalko (8-for-13) provided a one-two punch for the Lancers, finishing with 22 and 21 points, respectively. Erin Asher chipped in 15 points on 7-for-14 shooting, while Darsha Burnside grabbed a double-double on the night, scoring 10 points (4-for-6) and snatching 13 rebounds.
Emma Meriggioli got things going for the Lancers, draining three-straight shots from the perimeter to jump CBU out in front, 9-0. Mihalko also got in on the action, sinking her own three-pointer, before the Eagles could stop the bleeding.
CUI cut the CBU run briefly, but couldn't quite control the Lancers as they held as high as a 20-point lead in the first quarter.
While the Eagles only trailed by 16 after the first 10 minutes, 28-12, it wasn't long before the Lancers built back their lead. Up 40-26, CBU finished the second quarter on a 9-1 run to hold a 49-27 edge at halftime. Kamille Diaz got the run going, rattling in a deep three and bookended the run by driving to the basket just seconds before the horn blew.
It was all downhill from there for the Lancers as they put together run after run to increase their margin to more than 30 points. Emily Schmidt drove to the basket with just two-and-a-half minutes before the quarter expired, giving CBU its largest margin yet, 74-39.
With just 10 minutes left to play, CBU could have just coasted, but the Lancers kept pushing the ball and went up by 45 points. The Eagles opened the quarter with the first points of the frame, 76-48, but CBU exploded on a 19-2 run to all but seal the victory. Schmidt grabbed an offensive board and banked her shot in off the glass to give the visitors their commanding 95-50 lead.
CUI cut the edge back down to under 40 points to finish the game, but not by much as CBU took it 103-64.
The Lancers return home for just one of three games remaining on the schedule in Van Dyne, hosting BYU-Hawaii on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
