Felix Gets Golden For CBU

LAIE, Hawaii — California Baptist University came from behind and then sealed the deal in overtime with a 2-1 win over BYU-Hawaii Thursday night.

The Lancers improve to 4-4-3 overall, 2-1-2 PacWest, while the Seasiders fall to 4-6-2, 3-4-1 in conference.

"We knew this game was going to come down to execution and heart," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We've been battling some injuries, but team responded well with our continual willingness to work. We created some really good attacking opportunities and we're getting better everyday. Now we focus on recovery and preparation for Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday."

Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, but things heated up in the second half.

BYUH struck first in the 60^th minute, but CBU made it even six minutes later. Haley Wheelon sent a deep cross into the box and Justene Kesterson chipped it up and over the Seasider goalkeeper to tie the game up at 1-1.

Sara Escobedo had her work cut out for her to keep her team in the game, finishing with six saves on the day. The junior goalkeeper had to make a crucial breakaway save in the final 10 seconds of regulation to send the two teams into overtime.

Three minutes into the extra period, Escobedo had to come up big once again, however, CBU turned things around in the 98^th minute.

Michaela Miller forced the BYUH goalkeeper to make a save, but the ball wasn't out of danger yet. Desarae Felix stripped the ball away from a Seasider, putting her one-on-one with the keeper. The sophomore kept her composure and slotted home the golden goal to lift the Lancers 2-1 over BYUH.

CBU has one last game in Hawaii, heading to HPU on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PST. The Lancers return home for a game on Oct. 20 as they host Notre Dame de Namur at 3 p.m.
