KANEOHE, HAWAII – California Baptist University came out hungry for a win Saturday and walked away satisfied. The Lancers beat Hawai'i Pacific 3-2 to come back from their Hawaiian getaway of four games in eight days with three wins and a tie.
With the victory, CBU improves to 5-4-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the PacWest. The Sharks drop to 2-9-1 on the year, 2-5-0 in conference.
"I'm proud of the team's execution, resilience and tenacity on this long roadtrip," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We're getting better every day and every game. Our seniors really stepped up and came up big when we needed them too."
Less than two minutes in, HPU had a quick look, but it fortunately bounced off the crossbar.
Almost exactly nine minutes later, CBU had their own crossbar miss. Desire Felix struck a shot from distance but it pinged off the top bar instead of going into the back of the net to keep the game scoreless.
Chaylin Couzens broke that scoreless tie in the 19th minute, firing off a shot from 20 yards out to give the Shark goalkeeper no chance at making the save.
Two minutes later, CBU capitalized again. Miranda Hald flicked on a long cross back to the penalty-kick spot, finding Jordan Dow. The freshman didn't even take a touch, tucking her shot into the net to give the Lancers a 2-0 cushion.
That cushion started to dwindle, however, as HPU scored just before halftime and again in the 75th minute.
Back even at 2-2, CBU was determined to grab another goal before overtime.
The Lancers drew a corner in the 81st minute. Felix took the corner kick and found Isalei Tauaese making a run at the far post to head it home.
HPU had one last opportunity in the final minute of the game, but Sara Escobedo made her sixth save on the day to secure the 3-2 win for the Lancers.
CBU returns home for a five-game stand, hosting Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday at 3 p.m.
"We're looking forward to getting home, getting some rest and recovery," said St. Clair, "before we start preparing for NDNU on Thursday."
