RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University kept pace at the top of the PacWest leaderboard and the good times rolling with a 2-0 victory over Dominican University of California Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers improve to 7-4-3 overall, 6-1-2 in conference to sit just behind Point Loma in the PacWest standings. The Penguins fall to 6-5-4 on the year, 5-3-2 in the PacWest.
"I thought it was the best game of the season for us," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "It was a dominant performance on both sides of the ball. We're continuing to get better every day and focusing on what we can control. I thought the players did a great job today."
CBU outshot the Penguins 21-to-8, putting seven of those shots on goal.
Miranda Hald got things going for the Lancers in the second minute of action, but her shot attempt was just a bit too high.
Angelique Carrillo gave CBU two good looks, but one knocked off the crossbar and the other was just tipped wide by Penguin goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos to keep the game scoreless through the first 30 minutes.
Justene Kesterson turned things around in the 32nd minute, however, finding the back of the net to give CBU a 1-0 lead. Sydney Rockett hurled a long throw-in into the box, but Dominican couldn't get a good clear out of danger. Miranda Martinez passed it along to Kesterson, who collected it and fired off her shot from close range to give the Lancers the go-ahead goal.
"Justene's goal shows she's capable of winning games for us," said St. Clair about Kesterson, who has scored in four in the last six games. "She scores difficult goals and easy goals. She's able to read what the defense is doing when she comes in on her rotation and execute to put herself and teammates in dangerous scoring opportunities."
Coming out of halftime, CBU wanted some insurance, but the Penguins came out looking to equalize. Sara Escobedo was forced to make a quick save just two minutes into the second period to keep Dominican at bay.
In the 73rd minute, the Lancers got their insurance. After drawing a penalty kick, Desarae Felix stepped up to the spot and placed it perfectly to the right of the goalkeeper to extend CBU's lead to 2-0.
The Lancers looked like they might get another goal before time expired, but Ramos made the home team settle for the 2-0 victory.
CBU remains at home for three more games, including Thursday's matchup with Fresno Pacific. The Lancers and Sunbirds kick off at 3:00 p.m.
