RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Fresh off its third-straight PacWest Conference Championship sweep, California Baptist University heads to Amend Park for the NCAA Division II West Regional Saturday in Billings, Mont., and is ready to get off and running.
The Lancer men, who rank fifth in the region and 16th in Division II, will need to be one of the top-five teams at the meet to advance to the NCAA Division II Championship in St. Leo, Fla., on Nov. 19. CBU comes off its sixth-straight PacWest Championship and looks to senior Valentin Robert to lead the pack.
For the first time this season, however, the men will have to run a 10K instead of the usual 8K race. Last year, Robert took 22nd overall at the 10K regional for All-West Region honors and will look to move up on the leaderboard. Ken Kipkorir, William Ernst and Jayden Emerson all return with Robert from last year's regional squad, while Dennis Messmer, Anthony Lozano and Michael Lowrie also join the mix for CBU, with Mirco Zenzen as an alternate.
On the women's side, Anett Somogyi hopes to continue her pace after winning the PacWest Individual Championship and leading the No. 9-ranked Lancers to their third-straight, fourth overall team title. The freshman set history as the first Lancer female to win the individual crown and went on to be named the PacWest Runner and Freshman of the Year – the first time the awards have gone to the same athlete in a single season.
CBU's women rank second in the region and need a top-six performance Saturday to advance to its second-straight divisional championship meet. It will be the first regional meet for Somogyi, Fruzsi Ladanyi and Leanda du Bruyn, but veterans Katie Deimling, Claire Rainey, Berenice Cleyet-Merle and Emeline Delanis will look to show the ropes, while Kate Robinson is the Lancers' alternate. Last year, Deimling, Rainey, Cleyet-Merle and Delanis helped the Lancers take fourth overall to move on to the NCAA Division II Championship for the first time as a team.
Race times
