Leaving It All on the Field

ST. GEORGE, Utah — With postseason riding on Saturday's result, California Baptist University put up a valiant fight and left everything on the field, but dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in overtime to Dixie State.
The Lancers close out the season 10-5-3 overall, 9-2-2 in the PacWest. The Trailblazers end their season with an 11-7-0 overall, 9-4-0 in conference mark.
"We had a tremendous year," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "I'm proud of our effort, class at which we played, and our integrity all season. We represented CBU well.
"With soccer, there are some things you can't control and we ran into that tonight," added St. Clair. "Our players did everything we could have asked them to do. I'm proud of how hard they fought."
After a scoreless first, things started to heat up in the second half.
CBU drew a foul in DSU territory in the 51st minute. Symone Mack sent the ball into the box, finding Desarae Felix's head, but the Trailblazer goalkeeper made the save to keep it 0-0.
Minutes later, Sara Escobedo had to make two quick saves before DSU hit the crossbar, giving the Lancer bench a scare.
In the 68th minute, Jordan Dow capitalized to give CBU a 1-0 lead off a double assist from Justene Kesterson and Miranda Martinez.
The lead didn't last long, however, as DSU scored in the next 10 seconds to tie the game back up, 1-1. Neither team could find the back of the net in the remaining 20 minutes to send the game into overtime.
Less than 30 seconds before the first overtime period ended, DSU stunned the Lancers off a long throw to take the game 2-1.
Earlier in the day, rival Azusa Pacific also drew 1-1 with Point Loma in double overtime to grab one point from the game and therefore win the PacWest title and the automatic qualifying berth to the NCAA Division II tournament. Still, St. Clair couldn't be more proud of her team and the class the Lancers conducted themselves all season.
"We knew we needed to win to go to postseason and we went for it," said St. Clair. "We went for that championship and the AQ, but unfortunately it didn't go our way. Sometimes soccer is a humbling sport and just doesn't go your way, but I'm so proud of the team for such a great season. So proud."
