LAS VEGAS – Even after two strong days at the UNLV Invite, California Baptist University still had more in the tank in the third and final day Saturday.
With 633 points, the shorthanded, 15th-ranked Lancers in NCAA Division II finished fifth in the primarily Division I event, which featured University of Nevada, Reno (first, 890), University of the Pacific (second, 834) and the host University of Nevada, Las Vegas (third, 679). CBU takes a bit of a hiatus, but returns home and to action when it hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a dual Friday, Jan. 6th at noon.
Distance freestylers Christie Halverson and Mackenzie Mergel provided another big highlight for CBU by taking second and third in the 1650-yard freestyle, respectively. Halverson finished second in the event, with a time of 17 minutes, 8.30 seconds and Mergel was just over three seconds off her teammate to take third in 17:11.55. Both were good for D-II Championship consideration times.
Five swimmers placed in the top-13 of the 200 butterfly to give CBU its deepest result of the day. Courtney Chacon touched in a B cut of 2:04.38 to nab fourth place, while Tchernyshev was sixth (2:06.83). Sara Yoshii (2:10.42), Anna Peter (2:11.31) and Liza Echeverria (2:16.82) took 10th, 11th and 13th, respectively.
Kylie Mihld and Andrea Laliena gave CBU two top-10 performers in the 200 back at fifth and ninth, respectively, with times of 2:05.22 and 2:07.04. Alex Wolf qualified for the finals in the 200 breast and took eighth (2:24.60), while Melody Coleman (2:26.72) and Echeverria (2:29.69) were 10th and 12th.
In the final event of the weekend, Mergel teamed up with Grace Oeser, Hannah Evans and Ariahn Givens in the 400-free relay for a ninth-place time of 3:33.57. More points came for CBU in the 100 IM, with Yoshii in 11th (1:01.35), Peter 12th (1:01.90) and Coleman 13th (1:02.06).
