Coming Up Clutch

CARSON, Calif. – Not much has come easy for California Baptist University this season, but the Lancers have proven to be clutch in the early going of 2016.
It was never more clear than Saturday when the Lancers entered the top of the ninth inning at Cal State Dominguez Hills facing a three-run deficit. Out of nowhere, in a game where it was no-hit up until the seventh inning, CBU's offense erupted a six-run frame that delivered a 7-4 win and series sweep over the Toros on the road.
"We just believed in each other and what we know we can do offensively," said left fielder A.J. David, who had the biggest blow of that ninth inning. "It only takes a couple of swings to get us rolling."
CBU has now won its first two series of the season to take a 5-1 record into a huge four-game set with second-ranked Colorado Mesa this upcoming Thursday to Saturday at Totman Stadium. CSUDH opens the year at 3-4.
A mostly-quiet game turned around in the bottom of the eighth when the Toros scored three runs to break a 1-1 tie set back in the fourth.
Good news for the Lancers was their heart of the order – Antonio Chavarria, Stephen Lohr and Mark Sanchez were due up to start the ninth. All three quickly loaded the bases with no outs on three-straight singles.
"It seems to be the offense is clutch this year," David said. "We just have the never-say-die attitude when we get down, and we compete with our at-bats until the end."
CSUDH was still without an out when Brian Ruhm reached on a fielder's choice that scored Chavarria and did not allow the Toros to retire a runner. A.J. David knotted the score again at 4-4, with a pinch-hit, two-run double into right field that kept two runners in scoring position.
"Our coaches do a great job with scouting reports, and I knew where he was going to pitch me," David said. "He was getting his curveball over for a strike so I was looking fastball and got one that I could handle."
With one out, Alec Morabito forced a throwing error from the catcher on a sacrifice bunt that scored, which brought home both Ruhm and David, to give the Lancers a 6-4 lead. Andrew Montoya capped the scoring with an RBI single into right.
The game was not wrapped up just yet, as the Toros got their first two runners on base to start the bottom of the ninth. Chavarria, who came on as a pinch hitter, rebounded by getting a double-play grounder to shortstop. The Lancers escaped unscathed and stranded a runner at third with another grounder to short.
Lohr went 2-for-4 in the game for CBU, with Jake Gallaway also recording a hit for the Lancers.
Chavarria got the save and Justin Montgomery picked up his first career victory. The true freshman showed poise beyond his years, being summoned in relief with no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. He managed to limit the damage and give CBU a chance in the ninth.
Dylan Stowell turned in his second quality start of the year, throwing seven innings in which he struck out six and walked just one.
