RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The first National Fastpitch Coaches Association/NCAA Division II rankings won't come out for another week, but California Baptist University is putting together a good argument to break into the list. The Lancers swept No. 7 Adelphi Wednesday night, grabbing a 10-1 victory in five innings and a 2-1 walk-off win in the nightcap.
CBU improves to 11-3 overall, with eight of those 11 wins coming in mercy-rule victories. Adelphi drops to 2-4 on the year with four games left on its California swing.
The Lancers jumped on board in their first at bat as Sarah Murphy used her speed to score from first on Hannah Thieroff's single to right center.
London Miller led off the second inning with a double to left center and was joined on base by Heather Smith, who walked. Jordan Mowatt loaded up the bases with a single just over the third baseman's head, setting up Krista Mann. The junior shortstop knocked a deep single, allowing Miller and Smith to score and make it 3-0 in favor of CBU.
Adelphi got in on the scoring action in the top of the third to cut the margin to two runs, 3-1.
CBU's response spoke volumes as the Lancers scored seven runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning. Erin Burkhart led the inning off by taking ball four and was joined on by Thieroff, as she took a rogue ball to the body.
The Panthers managed to get the next out, but it put the runners at third and second. Miller laid down a suicide-squeeze bunt and Burkhart scored with ease as she was already half way down the baseline to home. Ali Subia followed with a bunt of her own, scoring Thieroff to give the Lancers a 5-1 cushion.
Still, CBU wasn't done. Smith loaded up the bases once again on ball four and Mowatt knocked a base hit to left, making it 6-1, with two outs still on the board. Mann busted the game wide open with a grand slam over the fence at left, capping the scoring at 10-1.
Adelphi threatened to put some runs on the board in the top of the fourth, loading up the bases, but Kellye Springstead and her defense got out of the inning unscathed. She sealed the four-and-a-half-inning victory by inducing a grounder to Mann to end the game.
The Panthers started things off in the nightcap, hitting a home run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. They kept the Lancers quiet for the first two innings, but CBU found its offense in the bottom of the third.
With two outs, Mowatt kept the inning going with a single through the left side. Mann joined her on base with a perfectly laid down bunt. Murphy stepped up to the plate and singled to left. Mowatt never thought twice as she rounded third to make her way home, sliding in safely under the tag to tie the game at 1-1.
Rain threatened to call the game early, but it let up enough for the Lancers to grab a walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh. Smith took advantage of a dropped ball at short to get on base to start the inning. Tayler Castro sacrificed a bunt to put Smith in scoring position at second and Mowatt found the perfect gap in right center to send her teammate home for the game-winning run.
Kayla Hatch grabbed her fifth win of the year with one strikeout and forced 19 putouts — 15 grounders and four fly balls.
CBU hosts Adelphi for another pair of games Saturday after the Panthers head to Azusa Pacific on Friday. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 12:00 p.m. start.
