Defensive Lockdown

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 11 California Baptist University knows how to hit and hit often. Saturday was no different as the Lancers came out swinging, but they also locked down the other team's offense to grab 7-1 and 6-0 victories over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The pair of wins improve CBU to 15-3 heading into PacWest play, while the Toros fall to 6-9 on the year.
"I thought we played really well," said head coach Bill Baber. "We hit the ball and got some key hits, especially in that first game. Our pitchers did a phenomenal job shutting them down and were backed by a great defense. All around, it was a good day."
Defensively, CBU only allowed one run on seven hits. Ashley Coleman picked up the first win with six strikeouts, while Kayla Hatch grabbed the shutout by striking out five Toros. Kellye Springstead threw two innings in relief, one in each game, to finish the day with four punchouts and no hits allowed.
It didn't take long for the Lancers to get on the board as they scored three runs in their first chance at the plate. With one out, Sarah Murphy took a wild pitch to the body to get a free ticket to first and proceeded to steal second. Erin Burkhart pushed her to third with a base hit to right center and Hannah Thieroff sacrificed a fly to left to score Murphy.
Despite the two outs, CBU wasn't done yet as Jacque Lopez knocked a double to score Burkhart and then came home on a Soraya Shahbazian single up the middle to give the Lancers an early 3-0 lead.
Burkhart got things going again in the third, blasting a hard-hit ball right back to the pitcher for an infield single. Thieroff joined her on base with a double to center. Back-to-back singles from Lopez and Shahbazian scored the two runners to give CBU a commanding 5-0 lead.
CSUDH broke through the scoreless barrier in its next chance on offense, scoring one run to put the score at 5-1.
The Lancers weren't satisfied with a four-run win, however, and tacked on two more runs, plating one each in the fifth and sixth to secure the 7-1 victory.
Same thing happened in the nightcap as the Lancers took advantage of their first inning on offense. Krista Mann led the inning off with a single up the middle and gave CBU the first run of the game on a Lopez base hit. Murphy tacked on the second run, taking advantage of a Toro error to put the Lancers up 2-0 after one complete.
With bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the third, CBU struck again. Jordan Mowatt hit her pitch to CSUDH's shortstop, forcing her to make a decision, but the Toro couldn't make the defensive play to allow the Lancers to score a run and keep the bases loaded. Mann and Murphy then walked in two more runs before CSUDH could grab the third out.
The Lancers weren't content with just a five-run lead and added one more for good measure in the fifth. With bases loaded, Burkhart hit a shot deep to left. The Toro made the catch, but Mowatt tagged up at third to score the final run of the day, 6-0.
CBU remains at home as it hosts PacWest-newcomer Concordia University of Irvine next week for a doubleheader. The pair of games start Saturday at noon.
