IONA BOX SCORE
LA VERNE BOX SCORE
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Determined to keep an undefeated record at home, California Baptist University women's water polo won its first two games of the Lancer Invitational Friday, beating La Verne 10-4 and Iona 15-8.
In the first match of the day, utility Laura Kocsis gave a player-of-the-match performance, netting four goals in the game, with three coming in the final quarter. Hannah Evans, Valerie Spezzaferri, Samantha Banks and Courtney Menard also scored to give the Lancers a great start to the day.
CBU was allowing pressure to mount in the first two periods against the Leopards, holding a narrow 4-3 lead going into halftime. From there on, the Lancers proved too much for La Verne as they put up six goals in the second half, while allowing only one.
"The first game started out a little sluggish, but we put together a good second half and we were able to distance ourselves from them," head coach Jon Miller said. "We got more consistent with our defense as time went on and we finished the game well."
Perhaps one of their best performances of the season, CBU beat the Gaels of Iona 15-8 in the nightcap. Going into the game, CBU and Iona were tied in the rankings at No. 22 with the two previously meeting at the Princeton Invitational — the Lancers won a close 14-12 match.
"We shut the lights out with this game," Miller said. "We scored some early goals and it gave the girls some confidence. That starts to feed through everyone in the water."
Miller was pleased with the defensive performance with his team holding Iona under double digits. Offensively, Evans led the Lancers with five goals in the game, including four in the third quarter alone. Spezzaferri, Paisley Dreyer and Banks each contributed two goals, while Kocsis followed her stellar performance of the first game with three goals in the finale. Jessica Castellano also found the back of the cage in the game.
"The girls were motivated to come out and beat a ranked team, especially when they're ranked the same as us," Miller said. "Iona just beat the No. 11 team last week, so the girls really wanted to prove something. It was really a team effort."
CBU faces off against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday at 10:30 a.m., before challenging the George Washington Colonials in their final match of the Lancer Invite, scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
