SAN FRANCISCO — Coming off a frustrating day offensively on Saturday, No. 9 California Baptist University looked to turn things around in a nonconference matchup on Tuesday. The Lancer defense led to the visitors picking up a pair of wins at San Francisco State, 2-0 and 4-0.
The victories improve CBU to 18-6 overall, heading back into PacWest action Wednesday at Dominican University of California. SF State drops to 9-10 on the year.
"It was great to get two wins today," said Coach Bill Baber. "Both freshmen pitchers did a good job and had some great defense behind them."
Ashley Coleman started the day off with a strong performance in the circle for her second shutout of her collegiate-debut campaign. She threw seven complete innings, striking out five batters and allowing just four hits to move to 6-2 on the year.
While the Lancers got their offense going early on, putting a runner on base in their first three chances at the plate, it wasn't until the fourth that CBU could turn hits into runs.
"We had that problem on Saturday where we got runners all over the place, but couldn't send them in," said Baber. "We have got to break out of that. We're getting them on, we're just not getting them around. We get good hits, they're just not falling. It's bad luck, just going right at people or almost over their heads, but not quite."
Hannah Thieroff led the top of the inning off with a single up the middle on the first pitch of the frame. Nicole Hennessey took over the base running from there and made her way to third as London Miller blasted a double to the gap in left center.
Sarah Murphy then put down a suicide-squeeze bunt, forcing the Gators to make a choice on where they would throw the ball, but they couldn't get a throw off in time to allow Hennessey to safely tag home. CBU added some insurance on the next play as Soraya Shahbazian sent Miller home on a grounder to third.
"We did a much better job today offensively," said Baber. "We did a better job swinging."
The Lancers threatened to add more runs late, but SF State held the visitors off to go into the bottom of the seventh needing two runs to extend the game. Coleman made sure that wasn't going to happen, however, hurling strike three past the bat of the first batter and catching the second Gator looking. Heather Smith then sealed the win by fielding the ball and tossing it over to Erin Burkhart for the third out.
Once again, CBU put runners on early in the nightcap, but couldn't touch home until the third. Krista Mann led the inning off with a single to center, before Burkhart followed with a base hit down the left field line and Thieroff drew ball four.
With bases loaded and one out, Miller sacrificed a hit to score Mann. Despite the two outs, CBU loaded the bases once again, but couldn't put more on the scoreboard until the fifth.
Much like game one, Thieroff singled up the middle to start the inning and Hennessey took over the running. SF State threatened to end the inning early, grabbing the next two outs, but CBU put together another two-out rally.
Shahbazian joined Hennessey on base off a Gator error and another error during Ali Subia's at-bat allowed Hennessey to score. Tayler Castro then stepped up to the plate and knocked a hard-to-handle base hit to third, scoring Shahbazian to make it 3-0 in favor of CBU. Mann kept the scoring going, sending a deep hit to center to tack on one more run, 4-0.
It would cap the scoring as Kellye Springstead secured the 4-0 victory to move to 5-2 on the year. She only allowed two hits in the game, striking out a staggering seven — including four looking — Gators to grab her first complete shutout of her collegiate career.
CBU resumes conference action Wednesday, taking on the Penguins at 12:00 p.m. for a doubleheader. The Lancers continue in the Bay Area until Saturday, heading to Holy Names on Friday for another noon first pitch and Notre Dame de Namur for a 1:30 p.m. start time at the College of San Mateo.
"It was good to get out there and play," said Baber. "We'll be alright tomorrow and ready to go."
