SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — It had been a while since No. 12 California Baptist University had grabbed a mercy-rule victory, but that all changed Wednesday afternoon. The Lancers came out swinging to grab a 9-0 win in six innings and followed with a 5-1 victory in the finale.
CBU improves to 20-6 overall and an even 3-3 mark in the PacWest. The Penguins fall to 10-17, 8-8 in conference with the pair of losses.
"We did a better job getting timely hitting," said Coach Bill Baber, whose team had 17 hits on the day.
For the second day in a row, Ashley Coleman came up big in the circle for the Lancers, throwing six complete innings in the first game for the 9-0 win. She allowed just one hit, while striking out five batters, to improve to 7-2 on the year and grab her third shutout of the season, second in as many days.
"Ashley did a great job again," said Baber. "She completely kept them down. She was very dominating and had some great defense behind her."
It didn't take CBU long to capitalize on the day, scoring the first run in the first inning of action. Jacque Lopez opened the game with a single to left and advanced to second on the throw. Dominican looked to end the inning with her stranded, grabbing two outs, but Lopez made it 1-0 in favor of the Lancers as she took advantage of a defensive miscue.
The Lancer defense shut down any hope of the Penguins getting something in the bottom half of the inning, taking Dominican out in order to go back on the attack.
Despite the first two CBU batters striking out in the top of the second, the Lancers came out of the frame with a 5-0 lead. Jordan Mowatt led off with a single to center and proceeded to steal second. Krista Mann joined her on base on ball four, before Lopez found a hole in left center to send Mowatt home.
The two-out rally wasn't done yet, however, as Erin Burkhart loaded up the bases with a four-straight ball walk. Dominican broke down on the next play, allowing Mann to score on a wild pitch and an error in the same action to allow Lopez to safely tag home, as well. Hannah Thieroff capped the scoring with an RBI double to right center, scoring Burkhart from third.
It looked like Dominican might have a response in the bottom half of the inning, leading the frame off with a base hit. The Lancer defense wouldn't let the Penguins do anything with the only hit of the game, grabbing a double play to deny the threat.
Soraya Shahbazian led the third off by blasting a double and then advanced to third as the Penguins grabbed the first out of the inning. Mowatt joined her on base, before Mann sacrificed a fly ball to score Shahbazian. Mowatt stole her second base of the game and then scored on another Penguin error to give CBU a commanding 7-0 lead.
"Soraya and Jacque both were really aggressive on the bases," said Baber. "We were very confident base runners today, especially with those two. They really added to our performance."
Dominican held off the Lancers in the fourth, but still couldn't put together an offense to go into the sixth still trailing 7-0. The Penguins grabbed two outs, hoping to avoid a run-rule loss, but Sarah Murphy started another rally with a base hit to left. Shahbazian then put the game out of reach as she rocketed a long ball down the left field line, just tucking it inside the foul pole and well over the fence to tack on two more runs.
Coleman secured the 9-0 win by inducing two grounders and striking out her fifth batter of the day, catching the Penguin looking on strike three.
The Lancers struck first once again in the nightcap, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Murphy led the inning off by taking advantage of another Penguin error to put a runner on base. She then stole second and was joined on base by Shahbazian, who drew a full count walk. Ali Subia sent Murphy home with a base hit through the gap on the right side to make it 1-0.
A double steal put runners in scoring position and a fielder's choice gave Shahbazian the green light to touch home and put CBU in front 2-0.
Dominican managed to cut the lead in half, scoring one run in the bottom half of the frame on three hits, but CBU got back its two-run lead in the third.
London Miller led off with a base hit up the middle and advanced to second as Murphy followed with almost the same hit. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners, before Miller came home on an error by the Penguin shortstop, 3-1.
The Lancers were held off in the fifth, but added two insurance runs in the sixth. Murphy led the frame off with a walk and showed her speed as she took off to third on a single from Shahbazian. Heather Smith took over the running for Shahbazian and stole second on the first pitch.
Subia picked up her second RBI of the day by laying down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt, sending Murphy sprinting home to add to the Lancer tally, 4-1. Smith tagged up at third on a Mowatt sacrifice fly to give CBU its 5-1 lead.
"Ali had a perfect suicide squeeze," said Baber. "Even though she didn't play in the first, Ali had a very good second game, both defensively and offensively."
Kayla Hatch and the Lancer defense held the Penguins off in the bottom half of the inning, but CBU couldn't put up any more runs in the seventh. Kellye Springstead entered the circle in the bottom of the seventh, looking to hold off Dominican.
The freshman right-handed pitcher caught the first batter looking and Subia snagged the second out on a diving foul ball catch. Dominican's third batter battled to keep the game going, fouling off pitch after pitch, before finally getting a base hit. The Penguins managed to start a two-out rally as the next batter got a hit as well. Springstead regrouped her defense and Smith sealed the win by grabbing a fly ball in right to lift the Lancers 5-1 for the doubleheader sweep.
CBU gets a day off before taking on Holy Names on Friday for a pair of games, slated for a noon start. Saturday's doubleheader against Notre Dame de Namur is scheduled for a first pitch at 1:30 p.m. at the College of San Mateo.
"We're just looking at one game at a time, but we're starting to get our stride back again," said Baber. "We're feeling good about key hits and the team is really believing in each other. I'm starting to see us coming together."
