TEMPE, Ariz. – It was a difficult day for the California Baptist University women's water polo team as it lost both matches to Marist College and Arizona State University.
Â
Heading into the final day of the ASU Invitational, CBU was on an 11-game win streak after beating the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on the first day of the tournament. The second day was a different story for the Lancers as they lost narrowly to Marist, 9-7, and couldn't get their offensive groove going in a 12-2 loss to the Sun Devils.
CBU drops to 17-7 with the pair of losses. Marist improves to 6-10 with another game to play later Saturday, while ASU stands 11-4 overall.
Â
Against the Red Foxes, it was the usual suspects for the Lancers who kept the game close. Hannah Evans scored three goals in the game, while Laura Kocsis and Valerie Spezzaferri scored two goals each. It was in the fourth quarter that the Lancers found their groove, scoring four of their seven goals in the final frame. It proved to be a little too late to strike a comeback as CBU fell 9-7.
Â
In the final game against No. 9-ranked Arizona State, CBU struggled to find its impressive form that has been on display throughout the season. Paizlee Dreyer and Samantha Banks each managed to get on the scoreboard, but shots could only seem to find the woodwork and not the back of the cage as the Lancers dropped the game 12-2.
Â
Golden Coast Conference play resumes Thursday, March 24, at 4 p.m. where the Lancers will challenge Loyola Marymount University who are currently ranked 14th in the country.
