Holding On To First

ST. GEORGE, Utah — In part one of the showdown between No. 9-ranked California Baptist University and No. 13 Dixie State on Friday, the Lancers grabbed two big wins, 2-0 and 7-5, to take sole possession of first place in the conference. Part two didn't come until Monday, however, as rain postponed Saturday's matchup.
While the opener didn't go in CBU's favor, a 3-0 loss, the Lancers bounced back with a 5-4 victory in the series finale to hold onto their first-place standing in the PacWest.
The Lancers move to 35-7 overall, 18-4 in the PacWest with the split. Dixie State sits 28-10 on the year, 16-6 in conference. The first-game loss snapped CBU's longest winning streak since transitioning to NCAA Division II (18 games).
CBU could get runners on, but couldn't quite seem to send them home in the opener. The Lancers finished with five hits, one more than the Trailblazers — formerly known as the Red Storm.
Dixie State took advantage of its opportunities on offense, however, scoring two runs in the first inning and another in the bottom of the sixth to hold a 3-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh.
It put pressure on the Lancers to plate at least three runs to keep the game going. CBU got a runner on, but couldn't send her home as the Trailblazers center fielder made a big-time diving catch to end the game.
Ashley Coleman struck out two batters in six innings, but surrendered just her third loss of the season.
Despite hoping to put game one completely out of their minds, the Lancers found themselves trailing early as the Trailblazers put a run on in the bottom of the second.
CBU responded in the top of the fourth as London Miller led off with a double to right field. She tagged up on a fly ball to right and Nicole Hennessey took over the running at third. The senior safely touched home on a Sarah Murphy single through the left side to tie the game at 1-1.
Hungry for more, Jordan Mowatt got things going in the fifth with a double to the gap at left center. Krista Mann then laid down a bunt that Dixie State's second baseman couldn't field cleanly, allowing Mowatt to score the go-ahead run, 2-1.
The Lancers weren't done yet as Erin Burkhart joined Mann on base on ball four, before Miller blasted a three-run homer over the fence at left field on her second pitch, 5-1.
Dixie State responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the margin to three runs, 5-2.
CBU couldn't get some more insurance and looked to hold off the Trailblazers in the bottom of the seventh. Dixie State scored two runs and put the tying runner on third with one out. Coleman induced a popup and a grounder to seal the 5-4 victory for the Lancers.
Kellye Springstead tossed six strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched to pick up the win in the nightcap as Coleman came on in relief in the fifth.
CBU returns home for its second-to-last doubleheader at John C. Funk Stadium on Saturday. The Lancers host rival Azusa Pacific — which sits in second place in the PacWest with a 13-3 conference mark — at noon.
