RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After being put behind rival Azusa Pacific in the first NCAA Division II West Regional rankings, No. 9-ranked California Baptist University came into Saturday's doubleheader looking to set the record straight. The Lancers grabbed a walk-off win in the opener, taking advantage of two errors in one play, but dropped the nightcap 8-2.
The Lancers, who rank fourth in the region, hold onto their top placing in the PacWest with a 36-8 overall mark, 19-5 in conference. APU sits tied for third, 28-10 on the year and 14-6 in the PacWest.
As Ashley Coleman and the Cougar pitcher dueled it out in the circle, both defenses made key plays to keep their opponent off the scoreboard. Coleman threw five strikeouts to hold onto the complete game shutout and grab her 15th win of the year.
The opener came down to the final inning and out of the game. APU had two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Krista Mann drew ball four to extend the inning. Jacque Lopez followed with a base hit to the gap in shallow center field, looking to just put runners on base.
In a surprising turn of events, the Cougar center fielder couldn't cleanly field the ball, allowing Mann to get to third. APU tried to pick her off at third, but the throw got away from the third baseman to allow Mann to race home for the game-winning run, 1-0.
The Cougars started things off in the nightcap, scoring one run in the top of the first and tacking on four more in the second to hold a 5-0 cushion.
Despite going down two outs, CBU started its comeback in the bottom of the third. Mann led the inning off on a walk and advanced to second on the first out of the frame. The Cougars got another putout, but London Miller stepped up to the plate and turned on her pitch for her sixth home run of the season over the fence at right field.
Tayler Castro looked like she might put the Lancers within one, drilling a deep ball to left center. The Cougar made the catch with her back against the wall, however, to keep CBU down 5-2.
APU added an insurance run in the top of the fifth with a solo shot to right field and another two in the seventh to put some pressure on CBU.
Down 8-2, the Lancers couldn't pull off the dramatic comeback as the Cougars took the home team down in order.
CBU concludes its home schedule on Tuesday, hosting BYU-Hawaii for a doubleheader at 5:00 p.m. The Lancers close out the regular season on the road, finishing up the four-game series with rival APU in Azusa, Calif.
