RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In its final regular-season home game, No. 9-ranked California Baptist University came out looking to close out John C. Funk Stadium with a bang. The Lancers picked up a doubleheader sweep (6-1, 10-2 in six) over BYU-Hawaii to hold onto their first-place spot in the PacWest, with all six seniors playing key roles in the victories.
CBU improves to 38-8 overall, 21-5 in conference. The Seasiders drop to 9-27, 5-21 in the PacWest.
The Lancers finished with 26 hits between the two games, including 17 in the second game.
Ashley Coleman came out on fire in the circle, striking out six of the first seven batters she faced. She went on to throw a career-high 10 strikeouts en route to her 16th win of the year.
The Lancers sparked their offense in the bottom of the second, loading up the bases with one out. Jacque Lopez gave Tayler Castro the green light to score the first run of the night after she drove a base hit into shallow center field. Erin Burkhart followed with a sacrifice fly as Jordan Mowatt tagged up to make it 2-0.
Ali Subia tacked on some insurance in the third, drilling a solo shot over the fence at left field to extend CBU's lead to 3-0. Mowatt followed with an RBI single as Castro took off from second and rounded third with no hesitation to give the Lancers a 4-0 edge.
BYUH cut the margin to three runs, 4-1, with a one-run homer in the top of the fifth, hoping to avoid a mercy-rule defeat.
The Seasiders kept the Lancers off in the bottom of the fifth, but CBU wasn't done scoring yet. After Mowatt stole third with no outs, Lopez sent her home with a base hit up the middle. Krista Mann tagged up on another sacrifice fly from Burkhart to cap the scoring at 6-1.
CBU's defense held off BYUH in the top of the seventh, taking down the Seasiders in order to seal the 6-1 victory.
In the nightcap, it didn't take long for the Lancers to get on the board after loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first. Sarah Murphy knocked a base hit through the right side to plate one runner. Castro followed with another RBI single to put CBU in front 2-0 early.
BYUH responded in its next chance at the plate, tying the game at 2-2.
The Lancers took back their lead in the bottom of the fourth after Mowatt led off with a hard-to-handle double to left. Mann then traded places with her, drilling a double off the wall at center to put CBU back in front 3-2.
With two outs, Lopez kept the scoring going and powered a home run just under the scoreboard at right center to extend the Lancers' lead to 5-2.
Momentum continued to build in the bottom of the fifth as Subia scored on an error to start a scoring spree. Mowatt blasted a double to the gap at left center, driving two more runs in for the Lancers, 8-2.
Nicole Hennessey kept the rally going, doubling to left center and rounded home as Lopez followed suit with a double to the other side of center field, 9-2. It threatened a mercy-rule victory with CBU just needing one more run to end the game, but BYUH managed to get out of the jam.
Kayla Hatch gave the Seasiders no chance of trying to put some runs on the board, catching one batter looking and grabbing a snow-cone catch to end the top of the sixth.
Castro sealed the run-rule victory in the bottom half of the frame, sacrificing a fly ball to score Soraya Shahbazian from third to end the game 10-2 in favor of the Lancers.
CBU closes out the regular-season on the road, heading north to take on Academy of Art for a four-game series. The two teams square off Thursday at 1:00 p.m., before hoping to wait out rain forecasted for Friday and finish the set on Saturday at noon. The Lancers end the regular-season at rival Azusa Pacific on April 29 for a pair of games, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
