LA JOLLA, Calif. – When all was said and done, California Baptist University came one shot within an upset of ninth-ranked UC San Diego on the road Saturday at the Canyonview Aquatics Center.
For the second day in a row, CBU dominated the second half but still fell to the Tritons, 7-6. With about 12 minutes to play, the No. 22 Lancers trailed the ninth-ranked team in the country by four goals, but rallied back within one and had a chance at the tying goal but time expired before they could get off a shot.
CBU drops to 20-10 with the loss, while UCSD improves to 23-9. The Lancers conclude the regular season with Senior Day Thursday against Azusa Pacific in Golden Coast Conference action at 7 p.m. at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
Meghan Rowland put up an impressive performance to keep CBU in contention, with 13 saves and two steals. Four of her blocks came from point-blank range, with several others coming late in the game, as well.
Hannah Evans, Laura Kocsis and Lizette Perez each scored two goals for the Lancers. Kocsis added an assist, while Perez and Evans each notched a steal in the game.
UC San Diego led 6-2 with about 12 minutes to play in the contest, but Kocsis began turning the tide in CBU's favor. She rang one in from about eight meters out with 1:36 left in the third quarter to get things going.
Kocsis scored from even further out – about 10 meters – again 23 seconds into the fourth quarter to pull the Lancers within two, 6-4. With 1:39 to play, CBU put the pressure on the Tritons when Evans sank a backhander off a Courtney Menard assist.
UC San Diego looked to put the game away with an exclusion goal coming with 1:10 to play. Perez answered back with a cross-cage shot assisted by Kocsis with 36 ticks to play. The Tritons attempted to run out the clock, but left CBU with two seconds on the clock.
After a timeout, the Lancers looked to set up their offense but time expired before they could get off a shot.
The Tritons scored the first two goals, opening the scoring about halfway through the first quarter, to take a 2-0 lead into the second frame. CBU would fight back to a 2-2 tie with 3:14 to go in the first half on a power play goal scored by Evans and assisted by Paizlee Dreyer.
Perez scored from two-meter with 3:14 to play when she turned her defender and lobbed a shot into the near post for the goal for a 2-2 tie.
