With the split, CBU moves to 39-9 on the year, 22-6 in the PacWest – still clinging to its first-place standing. Art U sits 16-29-1 overall and 12-14 in conference.
The Urban Knights took CBU down in order in the first inning of action, but the Lancers quickly made adjustments at the plate and things escalated quickly.
London Miller started the top of the second off by drawing a rogue pitch to the body for a free ticket to first. Hannah Thieroff joined her on a full-count walk and Nicole Hennessey took over the running for her.
Art U managed to get the next two batters out, but Tayler Castro also drew a full-count walk to load up the bases. Jordan Mowatt then drilled the first pitch she saw for a triple, sending all three runners home. Krista Mann walked to join Mowatt on base. The pair executed a double steal perfectly as Mowatt safely tagged home to put CBU in front 4-0.
The scoring spree wasn't done yet, however, as Jacque Lopez blasted a two-strike homer over the the fence at right field — the second game in a row she has hit a home run — to make it 6-0 in favor of the Lancers.
Art U managed to put a run on the board in the bottom of the third, but CBU responded with another big inning to hold a commanding 13-1 edge.
Ali Subia led off with a double to right center, before back-to-back walks loaded up the bases for Mann. The junior shortstop found her sweet spot and sent her shot sailing over the wall at left for a grand slam, 10-1.
Despite a pitching change, the Lancers loaded the bases once again with no outs. Soraya Shahbazian sent in two runners with a base hit to the gap in right. The Urban Knights managed to get two putouts, but Heather Smith took advantage of a ground out to plate another run, 13-1.
CBU cashed in another run in the top of the fifth as Vanessa Juarez doubled to left center and came home on a Miller double, 14-1.
Art U needed to score a staggering six runs to keep the game going and avoid a run-rule situation, but could only manage three.
Ashley Coleman threw four complete innings for CBU, holding the Urban Knights to just one run while striking out two. Kayla Hatch came into the circle in relief and held off Art U to secure the win for Coleman.
Things looked like they were starting in a similar fashion in the nightcap as Mann opened the game on a solo home run to give CBU an early 1-0 lead.
Momentum soon shifted, however, as Art U knocked three long balls of its own to jump in front 6-1.
Determined to not let the game get out of hand, Mowatt sparked a rally in the top of the third. The senior led off with a hard-hit ball to the shortstop, advancing to third on a Lopez fielder's choice.
With one out and runners on the corners, an Art U error allowed Mowatt to score and Lopez and Erin Burkhart to safely reach second and first, respectively. A wild pitch moved the pair into better scoring positions and another error scored Lopez.
The Lancers kept patient and plated two more runs in the fourth to put themselves within one, 6-5.
Shahbazian led the inning off with a solo home run, turning on the very first pitch of the frame. With two outs and a runner on second, Lopez drove in her third RBI of the day with a double to put CBU within reach, 6-5.
Art U got some much-needed distance in the bottom of the fifth, however, scoring two runs on yet another home run to increase its lead to 8-5.
The Lancers had some work to do, going into the top of the seventh needing to score at least three runs, but they have seen worse before. Miller led the inning off with a double and Thieroff stepped up to the plate and drilled a home run of her own to put CBU back within one, 8-7.
Despite getting the tying runner on, the Lancers couldn't send her home to drop the game 8-7.
CBU and Art U conclude their four-game series on Saturday, hoping to wait out some rain in the forecast on Friday. The doubleheader is set to start at noon back at Mission Blue Field in Brisbane, Calif., with the Lancers hoping for some vengeance.
